Saints Row 2 Crashes

Post by grandta13 »

I recently purchased Saints Row 2 on Steam and have logged over 11 hours, but I have experienced numerous crashes. After installing Gentlemen of the Row, I continued to get crashes as well as BSODs on top of that. Any assistance would be appreciated.
Below are my specs:
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro
GPU: GeForce GTX 760
CPU: AMD FX-4300 Quad-Core
RAM: 8GB
Board: ASRock 970 Extreme4
Controller: DS3 (PS3 Controller) with XInput Wrapper
Other Games that Have Issues with Crashing: Prototype 2 & The Darkness II

(Note: Every bluescreen I got playing SR2 had a different error; I didn't log the earlier ones, but the most recent was MEMORY_MANAGEMENT)

UPDATE: I've gotten another bluescreen: SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION

The only thing I can think of, is whether you're running any background services like AV software or motherboard utilities. Try turning off apps and services that didn't come shipped with Windows, and try adding a DEP exception for the game's EXE.

Pretty much all I can say is make sure the game is corrupted and set the game to run as administrator.

To verify that it isn't corrupted go into your steam library right click on the game and then go to properties. From there select the local files tab and select verify integrity of game cache.

To run the game as admin just follow the same steps as above but choose browse local files instead of verify. Once in the game folder find the game application, right click it, go to properties, then the compatibility tab and check the run as admin. The process might be a little different for setting a program to run as admin since I'm still running 7 I can't really check :P.

Game was pretty buggy when I played it but I managed to complete it on a Windows 7 machine. Windows 8 might have more compatibility issues though.

I have also posted a thread about this in the steam forums: http://steamcommunity.com/app/9480/disc ... 873559500/
It seems that, while using the settings.dat file linked there, that the resolution was the only thing conflicting with something. Setting the resolution to 1680x1050 (Windowed) instead of 1920x1080 (Windowed) has increased the stability. There may be a background process or something creating the issue, but it is stable at these settings.

Except for Chrome, which I terminate before starting a game, these are the processes that are usually open at any given time:

(I have verified the integrity and set compatibility options, including 'Run as Administrator'.)

Christ, crashing is the least of that ports problems. I always suggest everyone just skip ahead to SR3. That's where the game developed a sense of humor anyway.
