It's good to know that hyperkin really has revised the hardware. Do you feel the improvement justifies the price increase?

If it's real quality inside and out, at least it's an honest effort to make everything more durable and not a justified increase to brace for non-existant legal defensive action

At first glance definitely. Clearly it'll take months of use to find out if something with the new pins within have problems from myself or others with the new units who can prove that they do have one. From at least what can be said outside sure. The top on the original model bent like a good 1/2 inch putting pressure in the center to get a game out and would eventually snap with age and doing that. Take what I said about the ports, rubber covers, and the pin slots in the other thread and I think I can understand the increase.

The Retron 5 I finally got that works, the black one, is the NEW model that's $20 more.

How do I know? It has tells. For starters the glossy top part is completely solid now, it doesn't bend when you go to remove a game and push on it for support. The pins inside while snug, they're new console snug, they're not death grip tight from various peoples complaints and they look more rigid(firm/quality) a little too. Also, they started to include on them nicer controller ports on the side which also have rubber seal caps over them to keep them safe and clean. I don't recall any other obvious things at this rate which would make it clear, but it appears at the least these exterior physical changes account for the price bump if not more inside we can't see or feel.

Maybe post pictures and descriptions of what to look for in the revised model such as those newer controller ports and that glossy top difference? Comparison shots of the older model (thru Google Images) will really help. Maybe even a picture of the model number that might have an identifier of the revision? You mentioned the cart slots are not death grip tight anymore, does this also apply to the Genesis slot?

Alright I still have a spare gray box too in the closet, I can show the difference in size on that and I'll pull the black console out from the wall when I can here later and snap a few images and stuff them up on my photobucket or google drive.

Hyperkin announced today that the Retron 5 received CE certification opening up sales in Europe in the next few months. They will also be getting the new improved units with the better quality components.

In other news, troll bait is starting to run out on their Facebook

I've been playing some good 'ol Mike Tyson's Punch Out. I still never get tired of how good these games look on the Retron.

Finally! I wonder who Hyperkin had to make disappear within a freeway overpass at the supplier of their bluetooth device to get the specs so the CE would be happy. That definitely will kill that troll bait once it gets into stores in 2015. Considering so few give a damn about GPL and software bitching trolls to the point now they're being shouted out and mocked on some posts on that facebook page it should change things.

Those new parts, they're already in there. My replacement black system I got a few weeks back is the new machine. See for yourself: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id= ... =drive_web

The top glossy area no longer caves in with the slightest touch. Side ports better also come with rubber caps to keep them clean. Back 'reset hole' is covered up. Not imaged but the pins on the interior are different, they don't start out firmly to obscenely tight putting up a fight to get in and out. They're overall just like the rest of the system much more durable and of a better build.

Ferret I do agree, mostly I will admit, I've been using the system since June for Gameboy Advance and Famicom mostly. A few days ago or so I loaded up any IPS I could find to make my Famicom games in english (CV3, Armadillo, Wai Wai World 2, etc) and also threw a couple other patches like the one that retranslates correct Castlevania 2 and also adds in a world map when you press Select Button. Had those dunces at Konami gone with the MMC1 style this hack does and did those things that game would definitely be more hailed than reviled. I never hated it, I had NP mag with the map fold out. :P

On the new units I like that the plastic on the top doesn't sag when pressed down, because when you push and pull down on the cartridges it could probably snap at any time. The caps for the controller ports are nice too.

I've been using it for GBA and NES, with SNES right after that. I never had a Genesis so I don't have too many games for it now, but when we did Phelios it looked and worked nice. Guess I'm lucky to have one of these "early adopter" units with no real issues so far.
