True. You definitely have to give those up to get vegan powers.

I have had many friends go vegan for six months or a year. They immediately try to convert me to the cult of veggie. "You should go vegan, Sam!" I smile and politely decline. I long ago quit arguing the point. Arguing with a vegan about veganism is like arguing with a priest about religion. I'll never change his mind, so I don't waste my breath.

I simply wait...

The first few weeks are the evangelist stage. Screenings of "earthlings" and other such unpleasant documentaries follow. I politely decline my invitation do drink the kool-aide made with beet sugar rather than bleached cane sugar.

After a few months, the vegan has stopped trying to convert me. Instead, he only tries to convince me that vegan recipes taste just like the real thing. Sure they do.

After six months, a crack develops in the vegan armor. The vegan tastes cheese. It couldn't possibly hurt just this once, right?

Then comes the inevitable fall: bacon. It's always bacon. It must be the devil himself who makes bacon so tasty. There's no other explanation for the temptation of bacon.

I know that I'm being a cocky carnivore when I type this. Although this pattern applies to dozens of other vegans I've known, I begrudgingly admit that I have observed one exception to this rule. My best friend Megan the vegan still remains a vegan after three years. So far, one vegan I know bucks the trend. Maybe there's hope yet.

I actually read somewhere that vegetarianism and/or veganism actually lowers sperm count in men, but then again it was a supermarket tabloid.

Also, I could never do any kind of major diet since I'm too picky as it is.

Also speaking of diets, a possible solution to a problem I've been having for a while now (where my chest and sometimes back itches like mad when I get too hot) may be having to give up caffeine, sugar and carbs. The problem is that sugar and/or carbs is in everything I eat, and the stuff I do eat that lacks those three things is chicken and turkey, as well as bacon and eggs. If it was just caffeine I'd see no real issue, but between limited funds (I only get $190 in food stamps a month and I'm already down to just under $70) and the price of things that would be safe to eat until the condition (my limited research points to some kind of yeast) goes away is too high to keep it up for a few weeks. Plus Thanksgivings in a few weeks and who the hell eats just turkey with no gravy or mashed potatoes?

And how the turkey's gonna get cooked this year when we don't have gas for the oven (my brother's house didn't come with an electric oven) I don't really know. But whatever it is will no doubt be better than last year.

This is true of so many people who say they're becoming a vegetarian too.

If people actually want to be a vegetarian, vegan or to have any other selective diet, they will do. Honestly I've found the people who slip up and eat bacon or cheese or whatever generally just did it to seem cool or because they thought it'd help them lose weight or some other reason and didn't really believe in what they were doing.

For what it's worth, I couldn't become a vegan. I could definitely manage to become a vegetarian, but I don't much feel the need to. I have been a pescetarian for 18 years or so now though.

Heh, yeah, those sorts of stories are why I'd ramp it up slowly.

'Course my body's going through enough physiological changes as it is without drastically shifting my diet anyways.

I guess another way of putting it would be that if you told me that 40 year old me was vegan I'd believe you.

Yeah I don't think that's something I'd need to worry about.

Truth: My Sister only eats at veggie only restaurants because at other restaurants a pot used to make her meal may have been the same pot that once was used to cook meat.

Smile: Last night's dinner was a smash. Roasted the eggplant on a cooling rack ant came out perfect and looked like it was grilled due to the crosshatches left by the rack.

I wouldn't want to live without meat and cheese.
