Who hates smoking?

Tried it, not for me, nor is any drug, or alchohol for that matter. Sure sometimes a beer at a party is okay but honestly doesnt matter that much.

Same here. I've never drank, done drugs or smoked. Never will. I'll stick to fruit.

I'm smoking my pipe as I read/type this. I smoke pipes and cigars. Although I think it should be left to the owner (or the free market, ultimately) whether privately owned eateries are smoking or non-smoking, I never really feel like lighting up when I'm done eating. I do like to smoke at bars, which is less and less possible nowadays. The public-health issue related to second-hand smoking is somewhat logical, except that the second-hand threat is based on very iffy science. (meta-studies and "consensus" do not equal scientific investigation or testing hypotheses). The whole matter of whether tobacco smoke "causes" cancer itself is quite questionable, especially when pipes and cigars enter the equation (look it up, pipe smoking, when studied has shown fairly insignificant health effects or sometimes even a positive health correlation). It's too bad that politics have entered so strongly - if they weren't so prevalent we might have some actual scientific investigations of the matter. I really tire from all those who wish to control others over this issue, but since tobacco has since its discovery by the West incited the urge in certain individuals and groups to control and to enact nanny-state restrictions I suppose the situation is here to stay (although I'm hopeful the pendulum will swing again and there will be greater toleration in the future). The whole smoker equals bad person or second class citizen has got to go, although I agree that it is a sad situation when people let a recreational habit become an addiction, but I feel the same way about alcohol, drugs, overconsumption, or anything else that is not taken with moderation.

I'd put more faith in the science that says smoke (the stuff that makes you cough and not be able to breath properly) is bad for you than anything saying it's good for you. Everything has its positives and negatives but I'd say the negatives of cigarette smoke (and everything else in cigarettes) is bad for you. Of course I would leave it at the disgression of a retail/restaurant owner whether or not they want to allow smoking in their establishment, but I'll stand behind laws that say if you allow it, your clientel has to be of smoking age or older.

Smoking is largely affected to the user, in it's array of death. When you drink you put others at risk(duis,date rape which usually happens at parties(you're thinking of when your drink is spiked, ghb or whatever is rare and thus alcohol is typically the after-thought of choice(hot chick lying passed out on the couch, bang bang)lol. Even if it is 10 percent, that is still absoltuly horrible. even if in some quasi-utopian world 10 percent of intoxicated patrons decided to drive and kill someone, this is still horrible. These consquences of alchol as well of other free choices are largely untrue with tobacco.
Also, for all the I hate when people smoke in crowds blah blah blah blah. In free society, we are forced to tolerate what we hate. Which is great, and you forgot bums, herion addicts, new england(absolutly ugly place), and all the other actual social ills which are "unpleasant". Time to smoke another cigerette. mmm mm marlboros.


And finally mozgous brought up a great point. The critics of smoking should be up in arms of congrualtory thanks. Thanks for helping to solve the world's problem noble tobacco smoker. Thank you for putting your concern into action. By smoking we are saving the world through a very effective means of population control. I accept your thanks and thank all of you fellow smokers.

population control eh? Genocide and war work fine. To bad we are trying to stop it. If you ask me, we can expect a WW3 in the next 30 years or so, lack of food etc. will get to great and in order to balance out, people will need to die. Therefor, I say, launch those f*ckin nukes!!!!

I've always thought it was funny how people have viewed overpopulatoin as a some sort of giant dilemma, the future precidament of our lifetime. How are going to solve the problem, war, genocide, smoking(china's method). It's very simple, less babies. Overpopulation largely exists in third-world countries due to poverty and need of additonal children to circumvent this situation(more farm slaves); which ironically becomes a prisoner's dilemma or endless circle of doom.
Contraception and economic reform are the most logical and benefical solutions.

ummm... no, he didn't.

Irony has only a couple uses. When you say in writing or speech one thing when you mean another.

As in, "Smells delicious!" after sniffing a pile of dung.

Or an outcome to some event when something else was to be expected. Such as going to Dr. Kevorkian to have lung cancer removed and thusly saving your life. (any one who doesn't know who Dr. Kevorkian is might not get it)

The idea a smoker lights up when reading about smoking is an expected reaction.
