What was the last movie you've seen?

Saw and loved Interstellar. Loved discussing all the themes, motifs, and theoreticals afterwords with my wife. Nolan's story-telling and direction and their physicist co-producer along with the cast made it for me. Might be my film of the year.

Maddox is a satirical jerk, which I appreciate, but his rule about "don't talk about a movie you just saw" is very sound.

Nothing personal, but "don't talk about a movie right after you saw it" is great advice. Not judging your view of INTERSTELLAR at all. I only bring this up as I watched MAN OF STEEL and walked out of the theater thinking it was great, and said "It finally got Superman right". Then I saw the exact same movie within a week later and hated it.

At the same time, Nolan knows his audience very well. And INTERSTELLAR is so much Nolan that his fans (hell, even people that don't like him) have every right to love it.

Beautiful movie, but found it very paint by the numbers. I'm half joking when I say for over an hour I was saying to myself "Okay. Leo or Bale is going to show up any minute now right?". And it is worth seeing in the theater as it is a feast for your eyes, but it fell a bit flat to me as far as it depended on being beautiful (which it indeed accomplish). But the script...Empty.

I thought it was impressive. Really felt like a modern or updated 2001 Space Odyssey. It does want to be beautiful, but it is part of the allure of the exploration and awe.

I feel like Interstellar may really be a movie that you need to see at home and at your own pace. Sure you lose that visceral visual extravaganza, but I always felt that those really do distract you from a film intellectually. I think that, if you sat down and watched it at your own pace at home, you could find out if it is truly interesting and engaging, or bland and trying to hard.

And you are right about the title of the thread Apps, but like with movies, art, video games, music, etc., it's always a good idea to let "stuff digest" for a bit. I emphasize this again as it's on our nature to make knee jerk reactions. Saves you from the embarrassment of having to do a 180.

Yeah, I'd agree.

I'd say it goes both ways too, though. I've had plenty of stuff I was "eh" about right after seeing/hearing/playing/etc that I eventually warmed up to in a really big way.

For certain. We also do this with people. "Man...I spent ninety minutes with the guy, and he's a grade A moron", all because of comment or two that guy made.

In short, sit back and take time to think before you criticize. Too bad we all seem to be short on time.

I agree, we also saw the parallel with 2001 Space Odyssey, having also seen it again earlier this year. I loved the way it was presented and its artistic views of the distant cosmos.

BMF: I didn't think seeing it in the theater detracted from my experience. I was so engaged from all of the action and exploration of space that it was a visual feast.

Luke: All I have to say is, Come on!!! Why does this thread even exist then? For all the pages in this thread, you haven't done this ever? The reason why I loved the film so much is it gave me a lot to think about. When a film causes me to reflect and offers lots of thought provoking moments, that's when I know I've enjoyed it. Since this movie had an abundance of ideas, allegories, themes, that we discussed for three hours afterwards, I'd quantify that as a strong positive.

This also seems strange that you have this sort of opinion on a gaming forum. I'm not sure that this type of opinion would be well received if we were discussing the newest games. Because the medium of film differs from video games in the fact that we have to sit through the entire movie (if we're in the theater) to get the full experience. For games in our home, we can pause and go back to it. I don't think that offers any concrete conclusions about what we enjoyed, how we enjoyed it, or why we enjoyed our experience.

Oh there is nothing wrong with getting a theater experience by any means! With some films, that is the whole point. What I have noticed in the past, though, is that some films use that visual spectacle to mask the film. For instance, some movies use music in ways to easily manipulate your emotions and make you think you are feeling a genuine feeling based on the acting on screen, but in reality it is just the sound.

I want to stress that Interstellar is in no way bad! But I feel like it is a film that needs repetitive watches to really digest it fully and the best way to do that is at home.
