Sarge: I think their intent really was the GBA sticking around longer, but they were just forced to get something better out due to Sony that's all. I think the third pillar really came down to appeasing both marketed devices so no one felt burnt. PSP was for a time a legit threat, but its shortcomings and overall design didn't help it move well and then DS stomped it. I know the DS didn't kill it immediately, it hung in for awhile even getting oddball PC and PS1 games even, and the last title was Samurai Deeper Kyo which looks pretty solid. I'm aware of the GBA to DS software migration, it was wise.
Popo: Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't, and if I'm on my tablet that just doesn't happen. I know they were hedging their bets and I can't blame them since the DS vs PSP was like trying to sell a N64 against a PS2. I just feel the GBA should have been kept around as there was lots of import (and translation) possibilities and just overall cheap gaming for the budget minded as many GBA games can profit at the $20 mark, DS was $40.
Ferret: I've got a few recommendations of interesting GBA games which you can see there in my list of stuff I linked in that last post. A couple of the oddly surprising games were 3D titles since they generated the models fairly well like the Saturn did. The V3D engine with V-Rally 3 is amazing (full 3D terrain and in/out car views.) And then you have the Blue Roses engine, they converted the entire 3D PC shooter Wing Commander Prophecy to fit the GBA and it works well.

But the DS plays GBA games. If you wanted to make a cheap GBA game you still could.

Well 2 of them do, the lame DSi took it out, along with the first step to region locking of their handhelds thanks to it going online.
Re: Nintendo 3DS
Still one of their stupidest decisions yet imo (still makes me half tempted to get the games we don't get and a flash cart and somehow dump the roms of the games i would get that can't be played normallyTanooki wrote:Well 2 of them do, the lame DSi took it out, along with the first step to region locking of their handhelds thanks to it going online.

Re: Nintendo 3DS
The only thing that bugs me about the ruby and sapphire remakes is it seems like they are making it seem like this is a whole new region and everything from the commercials...which it's not(unless you're a kid just now hearing about it but still...). That and no emerald :-\

Re: Nintendo 3DS
How is that Fantasy Life game really? I'm very curious but also confused by it, suppose I could read a FAQ but then you kind of lose the mystery. I know you can pick a job and go with it, but I mean is it that unique where you're just a baker and do baker games, or a warrior and go kill junk in a cave and both rank up experience doing that? I just don't quite grasp how the game functions and how much you really have to do it 'win' it or feel satisfied with it. The ad for it makes it like Animal Crossing but not with jobs, and then RPG like leveling and battling if you take a certain job. I was once very interested now I'm in the weeds on that one.
Going forward I need to unwrap Smash Bros 3DS which I bought new for $6 weeks ago, but going into the future I see some fun things. Fantasy Life is still out there, Adventure Time if it's not bad like the 2nd one, Ultimate NES Remix, and Final Fantasy Explorers leading up to whenever that New3DS comes out. I don't like buying downloads, but that Mighty 09 I probably will snap up as it looks excellent, maybe on 3Ds or on something as I forget the formats for it (if it were on PC I'd get that since I could keep a download of it backed up.)
3DS is a fantastic system, done so much justice just like the GBA did a decade earlier.

Re: Nintendo 3DS
I've played Smash Bros. for a whole 30 minutes.
*sigh* Too many games. I'll get back to it eventually. I'm just way too absorbed by Sunset Overdrive.

Re: Nintendo 3DS
I have a DSi, mainly because I was looking to unload that $30 pink DS Lite I had... not the manliest of colors, but at $30, I wasn't passing it up.
Now, it's not getting much use because when I transferred my stuff to the 3DS, I had to update the firmware to 1.4.5, and none of my flash carts support that revision. I found a DS Lite again not too long ago, so I'm good to go again. (For the record, I have a ton of legit releases, too, so the DSi isn't totally worthless, but it is redundant given that I have a 3DS XL.)

Re: Nintendo 3DS
I've been meaning to pick up a DS Lite in nice condition just for the odd games that use the GBA slot as a peripheral.
