There's multiple areas of WW2 I wanted to see explored in games that never happened.

I bought Wolfenstein on the PS4 specifically because of the ties to WW2, just as when I was fed up with COD I grabbed World at War. I find honestly the WW2 era FPS games a lot more fun, challenging, grounded and interesting. The modern stuff just gets boring and the future stuff feels even more cookie cutter as it has been done even longer going back to stuff like Blake Stone from Apogee. I know the WW2 thing was blown out a lot by the MOH/CoD/BiA pissing contest from around 2000-2005~ but I'd like to see it back as I agree there are good campaigns that have never been explored or were done poorly as an add-on package to an existing title.
Another nice bone to be tossed would be a return to the land of Heretic (not Hexen.) Loved that old game and we're only now just coming up on DOOM4 after like 20 years so why not?

Have you tried Medal of Honor: Airborne? It's a unique take on WWII FPS games, in which you play a paratrooper who drops down onto large, open battlefields as part of a much larger force. It's unfortunately short, and there is a solid limit to how open it is, but it's a refreshing take on the genre and offers at least one level that genuinely surprised me in what it covered.BogusMeatFactory wrote:I kind of want a new FPS set in World War 2.

I agree with you, Airborne (forgot about it, had it on PS3) is a fantastic WW2 game. I think it kind of sailed under the radar a bit but it was a solid game and picking your landing as a paratrooper was pretty cool too as it gave a bit of variety. Whenever I get a new laptop I'll have to look into picking that up again along with World at War too.

Honestly, I thought World at War was awful. Not because of combat (though the game had plenty of technical issues). I just found it exceedingly distasteful.
I still think CoD2 is the best WW2 FPS I've played. Though, a lot of the archaic sections shine through now.

I have no idea what would be considered distasteful in that game compared to the others. I do agree though COD2 was quite amazing, not that the original when you throw on the addon pack was any slouch but clearly it was the learning tool game. Not sure what they were shooting or smoking doing COD3 but that one was just bad.

CoD3 was made by Treyarch of the time.
United Offensive (Which I thought was nowhere NEAR the quality of vanilla CoD1) was made by GreyMatter which went on to become Treyarch.
The people making CoD1 already knew what they were doing, virtually all the people were ex. 2015 members who made Allied Assault, and Call of Duty was basically everything EA wouldn't let them do in Medal of Honor. It uses a modified Quake 3 Engine just the same.
Prior to World at War, the Call of Duty games, in general, did actually treat the time period and conflict with respect. World at War was the first Call of Duty game I played where it starting blasting electric guitar riffs the first time I got a machine gun and was shooting body parts off enemy soldiers. I just found things like that extremely distasteful, and the entire game was laced with it.

I agree. The original Call of Duty was a seriously great game. Very challenging too. I'd like to see all these modern CoD fans play the first CoD, just to see their reactions to the difficulty.Cronozilla wrote:The people making CoD1 already knew what they were doing
Call of Duty 2 was actually pretty decent as well.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

And the entrance to Stalingrad is one of the best FPS levels I have ever played.Cronozilla wrote:The people making CoD1 already knew what they were doing, virtually all the people were ex. 2015 members who made Allied Assault, and Call of Duty was basically everything EA wouldn't let them do in Medal of Honor. I know of the developers of the various COD WW2 games that's why I think they were that special because EA abused the wrong people, they walked and made something even better. I personally enjoy and don't feel WaW was distasteful including the musical selection and body bits, sure it was different but I don't feel it was a mockery or anything of the time, it just wasn't period music (or period like.) The body parts, war is nasty and really I think the tech limited it with COD1+2 because it was pretty pincushion style with the gore on the old ones but it also gets some respect for that since it didn't get into the FPS "M" rated pissing contest either.
All said though COD was at its best with 1 and 2, and I think Treyarch in whatever form did make a nice extra for the original, it followed much of the interesting stuff from the Band of Brothers episodes from that HBO series. I think it has just totally gone off the rails and got exceedingly more lame and corny with the modern warfare and now future warfare stuff. They've moved from modern combat to shock and disgust like with how they rocked the US west coast as some lame cry for attention to get more buys.
