Will the NES Zapper work on this TV?

Post by HailToApples »

I have a Vizio HDTV that was manufactured in Feburary 2007, right before CRTs stopped production. I want to get a Zapper but I've heard about them and HDTVs and I hope mine doesn't have any input lag. Will it work?
I really just post questions most of the time. I'm that kind of person, but who cares...

Well NES Zappers are cheap. Why not just grab one and see? That's really the only way you're gonna know for sure. As far as input lag goes, grab the manual off Vizio's site and/or look through the settings menu on the TV and see what "enhancements" you can turn off or if there's a "game mode" that you can turn on (which usually just turns off all enhancements). Without all that extra processing going on you'll get less of a delay.

It is always good to put both the manufacturer and more importantly the Model Number! This way the specs can be confirmed exactly what the TV has.

Based on your description, I am guessing you have a HD CRT? No, retro lightguns will not work. However if it is not a HD, but an ED CRT which only goes up to 480p, then certain lightguns such as the Guncon 2 support the 480p mode. Unfortunately the NES Zapper are only for SD CRTs that only go to 480i.

As far as the NES console itself working no issues on a HDCRT other then no lightgun support. The HD Tube displays all retro and HD consoles with a crisp clear picture.

The input lag is a misleading description that alludes of controller response. In truth it is the visuals of upscaling with the "dot crawl" affect of LCDs that give that lag illusion.

I could get it online but in the chance that it doesn't work it would be a hassle to take it back.

I'll post the stuff on the back of the TV tomorrow.

Since the Zapper doesn't rely on Cathode Ray Timing, it could potentially work with any HDTV.

The only problem is latency on HDTVs are entirely different than latency on SDCRTs. So, the time frame doesn't even line up.

If the set is always 10 frames behind where the system thinks it is, it just won't work.

I suppose it's possible if you delayed the controller signal the same amount of additional latency the HDTV adds over any given CRT that it would then sync them up properly.

GunCon and other such lightguns that rely on Cathode Ray Timing don't work for, mostly, different reasons.
