Even though I am on Ack's side on the purpose Together Retro serves for me, I completely understand DSH's position. For me, Together Retro is about the discussion of the games as well. I tend to enjoy reading what people have to say the experiences they have with the titles. A lot of times, the well known staples tend to have less discussion over more esoteric gems.

Regardless of the outcome, though, I am very happy with the selection in the polls and regardless of what gets picked, I will be happy... except if we pick Tekken... 'cause... you know... Tekken

Ack wrote:The risk, Ds, is that you drive out members who have played these games over and over again and might be tired of them or want to try something new.

Take the action month: I've beaten Mega Man X and The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past multiple times. I've beaten Sunset Riders both in arcades and on the SNES. I've also played through StarTropics 2. Most of these entries offer me nothing of interest because it is ground I've gone through, not once but a dozen times. Why would I want to go back when there's so much more for me to explore?

I also don't see TR being a huge draw to new blood. At least, I haven't noticed it much if it is. I see TR as a great opportunity for the already present community to explore gaming history, especially the hidden gems that they might be unaware of. And if we pull in new blood in the process, great, we're still showing them titles that they are likely unfamiliar with and aren't covered by the numerous guides we offer on the website.

Unfortunately I must admit my view on using TR to show older and more obscure parts of gaming history isn't always appreciated, as some of the games I've supported have been ignored or outright hated, like M.U.L.E. and Populous.
I basically agree with this.

To me the best TR games are of the "well I have certainly heard of it but have never actually played it!" variety. That's why I nominated The Lost Vikings for 2014, it seems to be one of those games. But it is indeed tough to find that perfect balance between the so-common-we've-all-played-it and the super-obscure.

That's true as well. Thankfully a good number of retro games have tons of ports, especially if they originated in the arcade.

Yeah haha, that was my second choice. Went with Klonoa though, as I personally haven't played many 5th gen platformers (sat out that whole gen when it was current).

Also, because I'm completely insane I've already made my Summer Challenge 2015 list and Bonk is on it. If Bonk isn't picked for TR maybe you can play it this summer with me. We can be Bonk Buddies.

Why not curate two year long activities?

Have Together Retro for people whom wish the community involvement to go up, and even play more obscure games (within financial reason).

Then have an Intro Retro of sorts. Where it's just like greatest hits and popular retro games. It gives a decent primer to people whom are interested, but unknowledgeable as well as an excuse to replay some favorites.

Have discussions for both.

It also gives people an opportunity to choose either or both.
I've found I've ignored Together Retro for multiple months before because the chosen titles are either too niche or a game I never enjoyed playing, or it's simply something I don't own. Having more than one option could help out with participation. Look at this year's summer thread, it was pretty successful.

Two a month is probably still very manageable.

I agree with your idea Crono, but we weren't able to organize a steam curator group ( ) can't see how we can make a second TR happen

I like the idea, but it sounds complicated and we may not have enough members here to support such a thing.

We do already have several other "Together" type threads and participation in those is sometimes very low.
