I personally like my iPod photo 60GB, but it's the only player I've had.
If I remember correctly the Zune is a rebranded Toshiba Gigabeat so that may help get a better price.
I don't know of anyone with a Zune, but I have read pretty good things about them online.
Other than that I don't really know crap about any other PMP's.

All i have is an ipod nano. It i ok, its does crash from time to time (not often enough for it to bother me, but it has happened.) What do you care most about? Space, features, battery?

My main players are a Cowon D2 and a Toshiba T400 Gigabeat. I like them because I can easily drag files to/from them just like a USB memory stick. No 3rd party software to worry about. The D2 sounds amazing and the battery life is unreal (10-ish hours for video). Only downside is that it's touch screen driven which can be tricky/dangerous in the car. Cowons are generally good, popular with audiophiles, but some loser models do exist. Not much to say about the Gigabeat. Basic feature set, sounds good, and has a nice interface.
I picked up an older 30GB Zune when they were cheap a while back, mostly to keep our son busy with videos during an international flight. It's not bad, but I'm still not comfortable with syncing and managing all my music with an app. I could never get things like album art working right. It doesn't get used much.

Until about a month ago I only used Creative MP3 players. I started with the original Jukebox 6GB and have been sticking with them. My current one is the Vision:W, which is about the same size as a PSP Slim with the D-pad side cut off, with the same screen size. A 40 GB hard drive means I can store my music collection and several videos on it. It's been fantastic to me.
Last month, I picked up an iPod touch (it was for charity and has the Blizzard logo on it). I use it for my walk to and from work, since it starts up much quicker than the Vision (due to going into sleep mode instead of off). However, I really dislike the iTunes interface. The Vision comes with software, but you can also just drag and drop through Windows Explorer. And the software is not very intrusive. Ends up feeling a lot like an FTP interface. I still use the Vision for plane rides and such, but for the 15 minute walk the iPod is good enough.

I can attest that the Sansa clip is the way to go. I bought a 1gb for 20 bucks for the gym and I love it.
The clip broke eventually but I just put a clothespin on it with a rubber band. Anyway, it's still great. I bought a better pair of headphone than the ear buds that come with it.

I sort of wish Creative still had hard drive based MP3 players... I have a Creative Zen Vision:M, and I still think it is one of the best you can get. Supports a lot of video formats and to top it off great battery life.
