1001 fetch quests hardly feels like substantive content to me
but yes multiplayer games do have a different sort of appeal

Except to remove elements like that all together would discourage the people who enjoy those elements, don't ya think?BogusMeatFactory wrote:The repetitive nature of many games, especially a lot of MMOs and RPGs are the most discouraging qualities in games. I feel like they need to remove those all together. It is a cheap way to create, "replayability," and is really just padding. What makes a game worthwhile is by creating layers of detail that, with longer playtime or numerous play-throughs uncover more details.
Full disclaimer, I don't actually play MMO's regularly. They take an extremely large time investment that makes me wary knowing I'm paying a monthly fee for all that time. But if I could find a free to play MMO just as engaging as World of Warcraft then I would probably be playing it regularly. As it is I have a few WoW character and every once in a rare while I get the urge to hop in and play them again.
Now with that out of the way I just want to say I genuinely enjoy the MMO style of gameplay, when it's executed well. What some people might call repetitive, I call relaxing. Yes the quest at level 50 telling you to go kill 10 demon's is no more creative or worthwhile than the quest you got at level 1 to kill 10 wolves. But that's okay to me. The MMO style gameplay of repetition, fetch quests, and grinding can (As long as the flavor suits you) be very relaxing and sort of cathartic to play. The reason I enjoy WoW on the occasions I play it is because it has those simple streamlined quests set in a very beautiful and rich fantasy world. Every area in the game is unique and has it's own micro story that fits into the larger picture. It's like going on a whole new adventure each time you reach a new area, and those repetitive quests mean I'm never too heavily distracted from immersing myself in that world and just kind of "experiencing" it.
Now by no means am I saying this is superior to a more detailed and engaging style of gameplay. In fact I can agree with you (And a lot of people) by saying that I definitely prefer a more detailed game. Those games with action packed and deep combat systems, rich character driven stories, etc, do always end up being more memorable to me and more "fun," but there's a time and a place for everything.
Sometimes you're just kinda tired from a long day and want to play something simple, or maybe you're in between games and can't make up your mind what to play next. Some people go for a round of Tetris, other's might pick up a card game or jump into a game of Team Fortess 2. Personally, I enjoy committing genocide on the local kobold population.
tl;dr version: It's all subjective, some people find MMO's fun. *shrug*
I feel old when talking to anyone my age yet too inexperienced to effectively talk to anyone older. Life is grand that way.

I'm not saying that every game needs to include unique gameplay aspects as you progress, far from it, but to make you run through the same dungeon with a half of a percent of a chance of getting an item you desire and randomly rolling against 2 other people who want the same item is a ludicrous game mechanic.
It is much easier to adjust gear drop rates than it is to create a convincing world, so game developers do that.

I think that's more people refusing to take no for an answer and being previously trained to farm for equipment.
I know a lot of people whom use that as their default play behavior in a lot of games where I would never do that.
Doesn't mean the game has to be played that way.

I don't like Zelda games starting with OOT. Shoot me. I'm still sleeping well with my fiance tonight.
They have escaped into the mansion where they thought it was safe, yet.

is this just a 3D thing or do you dislike the Oracle games, Minish Cap, ALBW, etc too?jvalentine98 wrote:I don't like Zelda games starting with OOT. Shoot me. I'm still sleeping well with my fiance tonight.
also lol you realize like 1/3 of the regulars on the board don't like the 3D Zeldas
Re: Do You Have Any Unpopular Gaming Opinions?
Yeah, I'm also not a far of much of anything past Zelda III and Link's Awakening.
I really do need to get my Gamecube up and running so I can play some of the GBC and GBA Zeldas, though, just to see if I enjoy those. I feel like I just play those older Zelda games due to nostalgia, but it could be that I just don't like 3D and maybe some of the newer 2D ones'll be fine with me.

It is, but this guy does this sort of thing all the time. Every new online Xbox game he's gonna sink at least 100 hours in it. Crazy thing is he's in his thirties, married, and works a full time job. I don't know how he pulls it off. I'm doing good if I can pull 14 hours in one week. This guy averages like 40-50 hours a week!BoneSnapDeez wrote:250 hours in one game is insane!
The most hours I ever put in a game so far was 109 hours into FFXII. And that took me a couple months of playing. But I'm almost up to 90 hours in EOU, and I still have two more stratums left.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Were you using "let it play itself" gambit builds to auto-level the characters?Exhuminator wrote: The most hours I ever put in a game so far was 109 hours into FFXII. And that took me a couple months of playing. But I'm almost up to 90 hours in EOU, and I still have two more stratums left.
