Wii-U thoughts so far
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
The GC drop out at the back half of its life hurt, but the Wii did all the damage it did to itself on its very own. Third parties didn't really abandon it, they had no good reason to support it. Just because the hardware sold massively similarly to the PS2, it only take a fast semi-accurate lookat the VG Chartz website to see what actually sold and how little of it in variety as it was mostly just 1st/2nd party games, crappy Dance titles, a few shovel ware games, and little else would even break 100K which was horrid for the mass of systems it sold. Even the really good name stuff that were spinoffs of big name franchises weren't exactly hopping off the shelf nor were the genuinely unique games made for the Wii either. Given it wasn't HD or anywhere near as beefy as the other two, porting much of what was excellent they got was mostly just off limits (aside from basically the COD ports Activision did admirably well.)

Don't take this the wrong way of anything, but have you pressed charges from the time Nintendo broke into your house, robbed you of all your livelihood and kidnapped your family?

Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
If they had bothered to make good games for the Wii and MARKET them properly they would have probably sold more. But 3rd party publishers just joined for a quick cashgrab. No More Heroes sold over 1 million copies with abysmal marketing. Many blockbuster games were marketed so much they manage to "force" their way into become a success (just like in films a shitty action movie is still going to make a ton of money, based on marketing alone (transformers))

I don't really see how people can say the Wii did not receive third-party support since there are hundreds of third-party games for that system. They may not be games that most of us like or the popular games released for other systems, but they certainly exist.
Also - and for the record - the Wii is a much, much better system than the Gamecube; the Wii's library is drastically better than the Gamecube's library, and despite statements to the contrary, there are dozens of very good third-party games released for the Nintendo Wii. It was an unabashed success for Nintendo.

I skipped the Wii last generation (got a PS3 instead - but my Wife had a Wii), but I had a lot of fun picking up cheap, great titles and finding all the hidden gems when I picked up the Wii U. Anyone who says there aren't great titles on the Wii aren't really looking hard enough imo.

I am glad that I am no alone in that opinion. There are a tremendous number of "hidden gems" for the Wii, especially if you are a fan of "retro" game design.Reprise wrote:Anyone who says there aren't great titles on the Wii aren't really looking hard enough imo.

I agree, there's a metric ton of unique third party games on the Wii, it's a very antiquated argument to say it didn't have support.prfsnl_gmr wrote:I don't really see how people can say the Wii did not receive third-party support since there are hundreds of third-party games for that system. it is also true that most third parties didn't even attempt to develop for the Wii until after it exploded into a phenomenon. And then when it wasn't easy after barely trying, they gave up.
I would also say, I think I like the GameCube titles a little more than the Wii titles, but I do think the Wii has a better library over all. There's some really ace games on that system.
I think I have maybe two or three titles that would be considered shovelware for Wii (I wouldn't, though, I think people toss that term around too often for games they simply don't like on the system as opposed to actual cash ins that were poorly produced). The other 70 or so games are bonafide gaming goodness.
I own way more games with "Crapfactor" on PS2 than anything else (well maybe PC ... I even own IGI 2 on PC!)
I think you guys are right, people just didn't look. They just got cliffnotes of the Wii over time. Mario Galaxy is out, now Wii Fit, now Mario Kart, now Wii Music: oh Nintendo the shovelware, the shovelware!

You know how I feel about the Wii, so you are definitely not alone. The Wii received a tremendous amount of 3rd party support and a lot of it was pretty damn decent.prfsnl_gmr wrote:I am glad that I am no alone in that opinion. Maybe it was different in the USA but I do not believe the theory that DVD made PS2 sell. Its very inconvenient to use the wired controller for pause and play.
Also, I am against the theory that NGC didn't sell well because of the kiddy image. I hate kiddy games and I still got a Wii to play NGC games. Here are the list of games that I wanted the NGC for:
-RE4/1/2/0, Metroid, Eternal Darkness, Def Jam, WWF games, Prince of Persia, Spartan Warrior, Killer 7, MGS, Viewtiful Joe, Killer 7
Doesn't sound too kiddy for me.
But I do agree that if you got only one choice between PS2/Xbox/NGC , then PS2 is the obvious choice but I was under the impression people then were not restricted to 1 console, who remembers Wii60?

Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
This isn't theory.
This is what everyone's experiences were with the PS2 and GameCube and the culture at the time. Now we have numbers to go along with the common experiences people had to re-enforce the sentiments being expressed here.
It just further establishes things we already knew.
Is anyone making the argument that the GameCube, in retrospect, is actually a kiddy consoles with kiddy games? No. The argument is that it was the perception of the time, and continues to be an issue in the gamer-public's eye in regard to Nintendo.
There isn't really any revisionist history going on here. I don't understand how any of that can really be disputed with a straight face.
