I've been playing Guitar Hero 3 regularly since Christmas time and I've gotten pretty good at Medium.
What difficulty level do you typically play at?
How long have you been playing?
What are you favorite songs to play? Which are the hardest for you?
On Guitar Hero 3, my favorites are:
"Bulls on Parade" - Rage Against the Machine
"Monsters" - Matchbook Romance
"Miss Murder" - AFI
"Suck My Kiss" - Red Hot Chili Peppers
"When You Were Young" - The Killers
"Rock You Like a Hurricane" - Scorpions
I'm terrible at these (among others)
"Reptilia" - The Strokes
"One" - Metallica
"Anarchy in the U.K." - The Sex Pistols

Re: Guitar Hero/Rock Band Players - Share Your Skills/Favs
I got Guitar Hero II for Christmas in 2006. I started on Medium, but moved up to Expert pretty quickly, and I've been playing at that difficulty since then. I've since managed to beat every song in GH2 and GH3 on Expert.
I have a ScoreHero.com profile (under the name "Orlandu"), but since the site's not loading for me at the moment, I can't provide a link. You should definitely register there; it helps keep track of your progress and measure how close you are to five-starring a song.
Favorite songs:
GH2:
"Mother" - Danzig
"Rock This Town" - The Stray Cats
"Madhouse" - Anthrax
"Psychobilly Freakout" - The Reverend Horton Heat
"Institutionalized" - Suicidal Tendencies
"Six" - All That Remains
GH3:
"Paint It Black" - The Rolling Stones
"Same Old Song and Dance" - Aerosmith
"Cult of Personality" - Living Colour
"Cliffs of Dover" - Eric Johnson
"One" - Metallica
"Through the Fire and the Flames" - Dragonforce
Hardest songs:
GH2:
"Jordan" - Buckethead (oh lord save me from the endless wall of notes that is the solo)
"Free Bird" - Lynyrd Skynyrd (The six-minute-long solo on this song annihilated me on Expert for a while.)
GH3:
"Raining Blood" - Slayer (It's all good until the insane pull-off sequences. The solo isn't too hard to play, but it's still crazy.)
"Through the Fire and Flames" - Dragonforce (Absolutely insane. I still cannot beat this song consistently. Like "Jordan," the reason for this is an impossibly fast solo that's all over the place.)

Re: Guitar Hero/Rock Band Players - Share Your Skills/Favs
I don't play guitar as much as I used to, but I play Expert on both Guitar and Drums. The only song I couldn't beat on Rock Band Expert Guitar was Green Grass and High Tides, which is basically Freebird v2. But I have beaten everything (not including DLC) on Rock Band Expert Drums.
It's been way too long since I've played the GH games (especially since they don't A/V sync as well on HDTVs as RB), but my favorite list for RB/RB2 on drums is as follows:
Maps by Yeah Yeah Yeahs (first expert goal I had)
Orange Crush by REM (such a fun rhythm)
Detroid Rock City by KISS (gotta love that swing beat)
Tom Sawyer by Rush (greatest living drummer)
Won't Get Fooled Again by The Who (greatest drummer evar!)
Ooo! I did just remember two awesome songs on GH2:
YYZ by Rush and Crazy on You by Heart. The opening for Crazy on You is killer, though.

I just got my first such game just before Christmas (early birthday present to myself) which was GH Aerosmith. I haven't played too much, been just playing on Easy (I'm such a punk!). I've probably only logged 2 hours on the game thus far so I don't have much to report. I have found that knowing the song pretty well doesn't help one bit! I bought a second guitar which has foot pedals for the whammy bar and star power controls, that just might help me do better once I get used to the controls overall since my brain seems to have the capacity to only process so much through my fingers at one time! Sucks getting old!
Ow! My small intestine!

Nothing but expert.
Currently working through expert drums. It's going well since I got my Omega Pedal (after waiting nearly 6 month for it to come from Canada!).

Re: Guitar Hero/Rock Band Players - Share Your Skills/Favs
Had GH1 and 2 until recently. I started on easy and worked my way up to expert on GH1. I got all the way to Cream's Crossroad and just could ... not ... keep up at the end of that one. Frustrating! I also couldn't do hammer-ons very well in GH1, they were much easier to pull of in 2. I didn't end up playing 2 quite as much, but it had some great songs by the Police, Matthew Sweet, and more.
My favorite songs have been (sorry if I mess up some of these names):
GH1
- Boston, "More Than A Feeling" - Oh. My. Yes. This was the moment that you realized how cool a plastic guitar really could be, especially when you bumped up to expert and brought the pinky finger into the equation.
- Franz Ferdinand, "Take Me Out" - I've been listening to these guys since their debut
- Megadeth, "Symphony of Destruction" - This is the kind of metal I can get into. Brings back HS memories.
- Queen, "Killer Queen"
- Cream, "Crossroads" - It's still loads of fun on medium and hard
GH2
- "Message in a Bottle"
- "Girlfriend"
- "Rock this Town"
- "Pyschobilly Freakout"
Now I have RB 1&2 and I haven't even unlocked all the songs in both of those, especially 2. In general I really like the melodic songs that have fun solos or just cool rhythm lines. I cannot stand the shitty metal they put in the early games, like White Zombie and Avenged Sevenfold. It's the kind of music I can't get into as a listener anyway, and playing those songs on GH/RB games is just nothing bug repetitive updownupdownupdownupdownupdownupdown bullshit.

Re: Guitar Hero/Rock Band Players - Share Your Skills/Favs
I'm hoping to get Rock Band 2 for my birthday. I've been dropping hints to my fiancée ever since it came out. I can't wait to play that. We're having a massive Rock Band party as well (my birthday is next week, wee!). It's gonna be fun!
I much prefer Rock Band to the bastardised version of Guitar Hero. GH1 & 2 were awesome then GH3 spoilt it. Neversoft should have concentrated on making Tony Hawk's better instead of making a music game despite nobody on the dev team knowing how to make a real one. Harmonix had the prestige of two really great music games before GH. They didn't just strike it lucky with the franchise. It was the next step for their brand of music games. With the new GH games you can tell with how the songs are constructed that nobody really knows how music works. Some songs will have ridiculous note patterns and 3 fingered chords for some really basic riffs. Just to make it harder. Making songs harder to play by artificially upping the note count doesn't make it more satisfying to play. Some of the songs on GH3 are just stupid and 10x easier to play on a real guitar. Instead of mapping the notes out logically starting with the expert mode and then removing/remapping notes for easier modes, it's like they started with hard as the 'normal' difficulty. Made medium easy and easy depressingly simple, then just added extra notes in for expert mode(sometimes just to make it harder, like chords where the middle finger switches position really fast despite the riff only going up and down in tones, you wouldn't play it like that on a real guitar so why would you make people do it on a fake guitar?!).
Overall the Rock Band games play much better and make much more sense from a musician point of view. Most people won't even notice, but I do. Plus the software is much nicer, easier to create characters, masses of customization and the DLC is much much better on RB.

I can play a real guitar (somewhat) and GH kicks my ass. It's hard to break "habits".
I get schooled by everyone all the time on this game. Nevertheless I still have a blast when I play. Played World Tour last weekend, had tons of fun playing bass and drums (even though I was horrible).

Re: Guitar Hero/Rock Band Players - Share Your Skills/Favs
I haven't been playing a lot in a while. Actually since I got back from LA I haven't played really at all.
All my buddies who play moved away.
But on Xmas my friend Edd came down from New York. He's one of my friends at VV, he was a tester on the latest Wii version. So he shows up at my doorstep like, "time to get you back dick"
He mopped the FLOOR with my ass. It was sad and pathetic watching this kid just smear me all over the place. Damn game testers!
I can still kick Adny's ass though (the other buddy at VV), he's an artist though, so he wasn't playing it 10 hours a day 5 days a week.
