Haha, very nice! I remember reading that three years ago. :lol:

I agree that it was a fascinating time. And I also think that the failed "generation 4.5" systems like the 3DO, Virtual Boy, and even CD-I had some great games.

But yeah, definitely some awkward moments. I remember hating the PlayStation initially. My brother was buying games like Tomb Raider and Twisted Metal and they all felt like clunky tech demos. I even thought the same about Mario 64 and decided to stick with SNES for as long as possible.

Appropriately enough, I was flipping through some old issues of Nintendo Power the other night thinking about how the year that followed the SNES launch must have been the most exciting time to be a gamer (in my view looking backwards - I was actually too young then to comprehend everything). You have an 8-bit system with an enormous library of quality games, handheld gaming was taking off, and 16-bit technology appeared to have limitless potential.

And that's just being Nintendo-centric. As a kid I wasn't completely acquainted with Sega. NEC existed on another planet.

Do not know what number but finished off Evil Within. I enjoyed it, gonna probably try new game plus at some point but other games call.

Gameplay was fun, lots of tension and great visuals. Story was a little weird and not the greatest of all time. It really did not do anything new or special but did many things good. Enough that I feel it is the best thing PS4 has had to offer to ME. It had its camera quirks at times and a few cheap deaths but nothing that busted the game for me.

I suggest it to people who like a single player game that can make you struggle and has a them geared for adults. Shooter and multiplayer fans stay far away. Oh yeah, probably a good idea to keep it from young children as it may cause nightmares :D

A point & click adventure based on the science fiction short story. An interesting look at the qualities that human beings will always have over any sort of artificial intelligence. Not too difficult to get into, and for 1995 it was one nice looking game too. Worth a try.

9/25: Metal Gear Solid Twin Snakes (GCN)
10/10: Mass Effect (PS3)
10/28: Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty HD (PS3)

Metal Gear Solid 2 has aged really, really well. There was a time back in the mid to late 2000s that this was my most played game. I probably murdered my first PS2 by replaying this game THAT many times. That said - it's amazing how terrible I am at it. I played through on Hard this time (did easy and normal every time before) and had to give up on a stealthy run about half way through the game.

Somewhere around the mid-point the game seems to punish players who choose not to ventilate enemy brain pans every time they come across a new area. Sure, I could take 20 minutes to pay attention to drone and enemy movements but I could also use a sniper rifle to clear the area in under 2.

This didn't bother me as much back when the game was new but having recently replayed Twin Snakes (the remake of the first game) where you ARE afforded more opportunity to avoid choosing lethal measures (or the cop-out that is the tranquilizer gun), this shortcoming in MGS2's game design was a little more noticeable.

The game definitely suffers at the end where the lack of reward for choosing stealth hits a critical low and the cut scenes get so long that my wireless ps3 control was actually turning itself off before I next had an opportunity to press a button.

All in all, it's a good game that I still enjoy - and it makes me appreciate all the more games like Peace Walker and Metal Gear Solid 3.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I'll keep the Borderlands 2 stuff simple. If you play just one DLC for Borderlands 2, let it be Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep. It is one of the greatest expansions to any game ever, with some awesome humor, fun challenges, and wonderful additions to the core Borderlands 2 gameplay. Yes, there are a couple of missteps with it(such as the glitches in the Mines of Avarice), but overall it is an excellent addition.

I'm still working to finish up Borderlands 2 by getting the handful of achievements I don't yet have for it, though this should be accomplished relatively soon as there are only 7 of them remaining for me to grab. I'll probably be jumping into the Pre-Sequel after that.

================================================

Street Racer is the other NTSC-U cart racer on the SNES, and while comparisons will be made to Super Mario Kart, they really shouldn't be. There's much less emphasis on special items and a completely different philosophy to track design. Street Racer focuses on lots of laps around very short tracks, some of which can be sped around in less than 10 seconds. Instead of finding weapons on the track, players collect stars and boosts, as well as health pickups which will repair damage. All attacks are melee-based, meant to knock other racers to the side so you can power on through, and there are also bombs which hurt you but launch you into the air.

To be a decent player in Street Racer, you need to learn when to stop accelerating into turns, because there are a lot of hairpins on the large number of courses, and in some cases there are sharp and sudden 90-degree angles and corners. To be a great player in Street Racer, you must master the ability to hop, as this gives the opportunity to bound over other racers at the start of each map and cut corners or avoid speed hazards to drastically drop race times. The bombs I mentioned previously are also effective tools, as you can use the air you gain to launch yourself across big turns and shave off seconds from a run.

But victory doesn't just come from winning races, it comes from gaining the most points, and small bonuses are added at the end of each race for doing things like lapping opponents, collecting the most stars on the track, having the fastest race times, having a "perfect run," punching the most racers, and possibly more. Some of these are easy to grab from the AI opponents(only once have I not gotten the star bonus), but some are really hard(I've never gotten a "perfect run" and am unsure what it means). But you can use these bonus points to shoot yourself high in the rankings, and I finished a Gold Cup run in first place last night with twice as many points as the third place finisher. The AI will also pick randomly at the start of the game which characters will dominate it seems, though certain characters tend to pop up in the higher rankings moreso than others.

Yes, races are set in three Cups with varying races, at 6, 10, and 14. These races seem to pull tracks at random, so you may end up on the simplest courses, or the hardest. You can also create a custom Cup with racetracks of your choice. There's also a practice mode to try out tracks, a battle mode to knock opponents out of the arena, and a soccer mode where you and the other racers fight over a ball and try to get it into a goal. These mini-games aren't as good as Super Mario Kart in my opinion, but they're ok additions to play around with. The real meat of the game is the racing and the options menu which allows you to turn on and off various stats such as vehicle damage...oh, and the 4 player. Yeah, 4 player.

Street Racer is actually really good! It's got some issues, yes: characters are...well, there's one in particular that I find offensive, the token "African" character, and the token Sumo wrestler isn't much better, even if he is who I prefer to play as. The mini-games also aren't as good as the game's direct competitor. But Street Racer still does a solid job of standing on its own against a titan of its genre.

================================================

After this, I'll be putting my first 50 in spoiler tags.

I remember reading about Street Racer in Tips and Tricks magazine back in the day. The comparison to Mario Kart was pretty intense and not terribly favorable but I did like the idea of more games like Mario Kart.

And then I remember reading speculation about the ULTRA 64!!
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

Yeah, Street Racer doesn't have quite the same feel to it, and there are some definite differences in how they handle their racing(a heavy use on random special items and longer overall tracks versus reliance on melee, boosts, and hops around much shorter but more treacherous tracks). I like a lot of the customization of Street Racer, and I love that I don't have that split screen thing going on that you get in Mario Kart, but Mario Kart blows Street Racer away in its variety of alternate modes. Both have their strong points, and both are worth checking out on the SNES. I need to track down Power Ranger Zeo: Battle Racers and see how it compares. I hear it's like a featureless Mario Kart.

And the name Ultra 64 always makes me think of Killer Instinct Gold.

Quick question as I'm confused: DLC stuff for Borderlands 2; different games altogether, or different quests?
