No Cable - No Problem. No NBA - Problem!

Post by SpaceBooger »

Last year I installed a roof antenna, a tv capture card into my pc, playon, netflix and amazon prime.
A year later I get all of the local channels (NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, PBS, CW, etc) and can dvr important shows like Arrow and the Flash on my PC and watch them via my streaming device and PlayOn. For regular TV, football, and movies (via Netflix and Prime) I am set... NBA is another issue.

For me to watch the Cavs I have to buy Uverse, Dish and the Cable Company's 200+ channel packages, the cheapest costs $54 a month with all the fees. I find it funny that to get the local sports channel you have to pay for 199 other channels and in most cases the HD package.

I contemplated getting the NBA streaming package (~$150 vs $380 w/cable for the season) but Akron is too close to Cleveland so I can't stream my local team.

Last year I streamed some of the Cavs games via a youtube low def quality site full of popups and other malware. I installed AdBlock Plus, but with that on those sites blocked the sound or didn't allow full-screen unless you allowed pop-ups. By the middle of the season it was too much of a hassle and too risky for such a low quality product to deal with so I just listened to the games on the radio.

Now that I rambled, I am asking if anyone has any ideas on how I can watch the Cavs (NBA) this year without paying $50 a month with cable?

And another sports bar finds one more customer.

I was gonna say, hit up a sports bar that has booths with the smaller tvs in them. They usually have headphone jacks so you can listen in and not be bothered by the noise if that fits your bill.

If you do go for the streaming subscription, you can (probably) bypass the problem with your proximity by using a proxy service like unblock-us.
edit:
Hmm, it seems unblock-us does not support the League Pass service after all. Weird that it's so hard to get access to something so simple sounding...
Maybe this or this?

I thought about the sports bar route, but if I went twice a week and spent $5 it would cost the same as cable. Also with the four kids, bedtime for them is at 8pm so being able to watch the game while at home is a must - it wouldn't be worth it to get to a pub at 9 for the 4th quarter.
I was thinking about what Anapan mentioned, but know nothing about it and don't want to waste my money if it doesn't work.

I don't watch sports, so I don't know if this will work for you, but there are apps that let you stream television.

I've had a few friends that have cut the cord and run into the same problem. For us the local Fox Sports Station(Fox Sports Detroit) carries 3 of the 4 local teams(Tigers, Wings and Pistons) and there is no work around. The best solution they came up with is that one of them got cable and then they split the cost of a slingbox and then split the monthly cost of cable. It's not perfect, but it's the best legal solution they could come up with.
