They're all excellent JRPGs. Lots of dungeon crawling (mazes), grinding to get your level up, set in a futuristic environment. Good stuff if you like Final Fantasy, etc. The combat system is essentially braindead, there's almost no strategy involved, however. If you want that, there's Shining Force. Phantasy Star is mostly about telling stories.

Actually, there is some strategy in the combats in PS2 and PS4, what with the combination techs and all. It's still typical JRPG strategy so it's nothing like Shining Force or other SRPGs, but it's decent for a JRPG.

And in terms of the games, you have Phantasy Star on the Master System, then 2-4 on the Genesis. Phantasy Star 3 is considered the worst of them, as it is only tangentally related to the storyline in the others.

Never played any PS either.

So if I get the new upcoming Genesis collection with all four, should I just jump into 2 and then 4? Do I need to complete 1? Can I just check out 1 briefly and move onto 2? Sometimes it's hard for me to go back to very old console RPGs.

Phantasy Star 1 doesn't suffer too much from being an old RPG. About the biggest flaw is that the zombies have an extremely long attack animation. Fortunately, there's only a couple places in the game you fight them.
