I've been watching Macross stuff lately. I started with the original series, followed it up with Macross II and Macross Plus, and just finished the laserdiscs I own of the Macross 7 TV series (next up: Macross 7 movie & OVAs).

SHORT OVERVIEW/THOUGHTS ON VARIOUS INCARNATIONS.
The original show is totally great: I had seen Robotech before but the Japanese version seemed more melodramatic and I think that's a good thing. Macross II was mostly bland and uninteresting. Macross Plus was really great EXCEPT for one plot element that I think was handled really unfortunately. I love Yoko Kanno's music for it and want to track down the soundtrack album at some point.

Man, Macross 7 is *SO DUMB* but in a way that I think is pretty enjoyable if you know it isn't the same as the original Macross. Like when the main dude is attacked by thugs, his response is to sing, but it's the most bizarre mismatch of studio-recorded-vocals with his on-screen dodging around. And every episode has had some girl in a sunhat with a bouquet of flowers that she apparently wants to give to the main dude but something discourages her. IT'S BEEN OVER THIRTY FIVE EPISODES AND EVEN THOUGH SHE HAS BEEN IN EVERY ONE, THE MOST DIALOG SHE'S HAD IS "Ah!"
Seriously, this show is ridiculous. But the animation is great! It's just dumb fun but I can see why a lot of folks hate it.
The TV series was released on 13 LDs but I only have 1-3 and 5-9 and then I have all the OVAs except for the final episode of Macross Dynamite 7. OH WELL. I'd like to see more but don't care enough to hunt down fansubs. Maybe I'll someday come across the rest of the show on LD or something.

Still haven't managed to finish watching the rest of the aired episodes of Attack on Titan, but I feel this show has been vastly overrated. Anyone else with me on this?

I don't think it's unfair to come to that conclusion, but I do think it might be premature. Of course, it may also depend on why you feel that way

I think if you take the one season of it that's out, then sure, there's a lot left unresolved by the end. Pacing is inconsistent, and a lot of exposition utilizes minimal or reused animation. It's a pretty solid show when stuff is actually happening.

The production issues could be something that gets addressed in subsequent seasons though, along with having the larger questions answered.

Source material or basic setup of it, brutality aside, also probably appeals more to a general audience. It's not centered around high schoolers, moeblob slice of life, shounen tropes, panty shots/ecchi, and so on. At worst, it's a fairly fresh take on the giant robot theme.
Given that, the buzz behind it kinda makes sense. It stands out from a lot of current shows.

As far as Attack on Titan goes I didn't really care much for the pacing or how they ended the first season. However I will give them this they stuck very close to the Manga and even improved the story in part by moving around when the training flashback occurred. For that they get big kudos from me since half these shows seem to fudge up the manga pretty royally. On the other hand though they stopped at a really shitty spot which left a little to many questions. However if they keep sticking as close to the manga as they have been then season two will be freaking amazing.

Recently I have been watching

Nanatsu No Taizai: The Seven Deadly Sins
Probably my favorite new Fall anime. Characters are just freaking awesome and the powers are really OP.

Terraformars
Insanely brutal show with some interesting character abilities. So far it's not really my cup of tea but I'm hoping it improves as it goes. So far it just seems like a really negative show with no sign of a positive payoff. So unless your really into gore there just isn't much there to draw you in.

Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo
Pretty interesting so far. A bit to heavy on the the fan service and sexual abuse for my tastes, but it has some pretty awesome Mech/Airbikes and the story seems promising.

Also watching:
Akame Ga Kill
Naruto Shipuuden
One Piece
Fairy Tail
Detective Conan(Might give up. I'm 30-40 episodes in but i haven't watched it in a few weeks. They are all the way up to 754 so I have a ways to go :P)

Plus I have quite a few shows piling up on top of my regular stuff:
Log Horizon Season 2
Psycho Pass Season 2

Watch macross do you remember love. It is absolutely fantastic. One of the greatest tragedies of the US anime market is the legal limbo of that movie. I hear macross frontier is also fantastic. Macross 7 I've never bothered with. I hear allot of negative things about it. Macross II is the only show in the series that shoji kawamori had nothing to do with, and it shows.

Anyone else disenchanted with modern anime? The Moe garbage is just too much for me to handle. I really dislike most newer shows and most the ones I do like are remake of older shows or shows that pay tribute to them. I think the anime industry is really heading in a bad direction. How long has it been since anime had a new auteur director? Will the next decade have another mamarou oshii, satoshi kon, Rintaro, katsuhiro otomo, or miyazaki? Most anime directors follow that George Lucas style of directing. They have great ideas, but fall flat on execution. In the last few weeks I watched Gunbuster, Captain harlock(original tv show), and I'm still crawling my way through legend of the galactic heroes.

Not really. Which is not to say I particularly dig everything that's coming out...but that's always the case, isn't it? 90% of everything is crap. In a decade or two, we'll cherry-pick the best few series from 2014 and hold them to say how much better anime was.

I'd say Mamoru Hosoda's films have been pretty solid (The Girl Who Lept Through Time, Summer Wars, Wolf Children). Makoto Shinkai (5cm Per Second, Garden of Words) may eventually get a script that matches his ability for visuals, some of the Trigger guys are already pretty distinctive and could do even more in the future.

I'm loving this anime. The story progresses every chapter, the characters while they are all anime tropes, are at least likable, and the action and death/plot and character development ratio is really good.

Yeah it's a really solid show looks like they could have a pretty good run as well since there is plenty of story left to explore. Was kind of expecting it to end the season at episode 13 so glad it's still going strong though.

I still think the first episode is my favorite though that was just a great intro to the story.

I'm not that old of a hand when it comes to anime. Hell, I got started in the late nineties watching the stuff. Allot of the shows that I enjoy watching simply are not made to a large degree now? Robot shows are definitely my stuff and its been a pretty barren last few years. TTGL was fun and gundam UC was good but it seems that nowadays the amount if people down with a straight up mecha show are far and few in between.

I can also pin point my disinterest in modern anime to one difinitive thing. The death(or near death) of the OVA. Allot of stuff got made into OVA's in the late eighties and early nineties that wouldn't really work as a film or TV show. Which back then, the anime industry was a lot healthier and more free with money in general. Things like Giant Robo the day the earth stood still would never ever be made now.
