hey all, I am in the process of moving and I need to thin my collections.
now, every time I read a thread about selling stuff I always think it's kinda like posting your add in a forum not intended for selling, but I still have a question and I haven't taken inventory of exactly what I have to sell.
so, the question I have is, should I sell the full lot or part it out. I have a system bought on launch day and related magazine subscription, most if not all demo discs...I think I have the original box for the system and only one controller.
I might get more money from selling games, system and magazine issues individually, but most likely all the games wouldn't sell and then there is alot more work associated with the multiple sales. I'm not sure I want to bother with ebay and deal with shipping. maybe just CL...and yes I'm also thinking of posting an add here.
I'm not looking for the highest price on ebay record but I'm not going to just drop it all off at good will either. I guess I'm looking for the best compromise of selling hassle vs the money and I like that someone will enjoy having the stuff too. I'd also prefer to sell person to person rather than take my stuff to an indipendant used game/comic/record type store.
oh BTW I did drop off a bag full of anime and various other VHS tapes at the Goodwill on Dearborne street in Seattle...and an s-nes at RE-PC on 6th ave. just five minuets away from the Goodwill if anyone is interested.
so what has been your selling strategies and how has it worked out ?

Re: selling game collections...
It all kinda depends on your desire to put in effort with selling and your desire for cash, which run a gamut of options. Individual parting is usually gonna net you more money overall, but you can always sell in a lot or even go the trade-in route if you feel like moving stuff faster. I don't mess with CL really because I hate dealing with it, but online selling has worked for me in the past. I prefer selling here to eBay because of a number of reasons, namely no fees and the fact that the stuff is likely going to someone that will enjoy it.
Re: selling game collections...
Unless you are dead ass broke or desperate, do not sell it. Purge doubles, and maybe a few systems if you have to but keep as much as you can. I do not care what anyone says you will regret it later. It may be years from now but you will.
My advice is ask yourself why you are doing it? Unless you completely intend on never gaming again then try to hold onto as much as possible. If it is another person pushing you then tell them no.
Sorry, watched to many people dump game collection and myself included. It was the reasons I did it that really kill me, as I intend to game till I go blind or die LOL.
Good Luck

Seems like a legit reason to me. I totally understand your sentiment though, wclem. You should definitely be wary of seller's regret. I made sure when I did my recent purge that there was nothing in there I would miss too much.nate wrote:hey all, I am in the process of moving and I need to thin my collections.
Re: selling game collections...
thanks for your thoughts
the main pinch I feel right now is time. I have alot of stuff to move, and I need to make space at the place I'm moving to as well as packing and driving it there. if I was moving to a completely empty space I wouldn't feel the need to sell off anything. I'll actually end up with more space but this whole concept of moving has me thinking of selling things I don't have time to play with, be it games or my model collection...or my wheel collection...like wheels for my car
maybe the best thing would be to box it, move it and then decide what to do. maybe I'm just feeling overwhelmed with the amount of stuff I've accumulated. it's a small apartment and I've been here for 20 years cause it's so cheap.
I need to get my stuff moved by January. fortunately I have a week off during Christmas for a massive end run.
after I'm in my new space selling on ebay may be my new hobby for a while.
I also prefer to sell on forums too for the same reasons. but I'm not really a buy and sell collector. I keep everything !!
it's just the one system I'm thinking of parting with. well, not really. I haven't had my S-Nes and N64 set up in years, or the PS1. but my BC PS3 has YLOD'd so I'm on a slim now. I will probably pay someone to rescue my game saves off my old PS3
I plan on building an new TV room in my new spot so I need to figure out what systems to set up. I'm not sure weather to get old Playstation games that have been ported to PS3-4 or buy one of the small PS Ones and a PS2. it's more fun thinking about building a new home then packing and moving.
so time is the main thing now. I don't have time to list on ebay, pack and ship stuff that sells as well as pack and move stuff without it turning into a huge confusing mess.

Re: selling game collections...
Pretty slick not naming the system, it keeps it really on the level not to sway opinion as it could be with demo discs anything like the PS1 forward.
Got some questions.
How much work do you want to do?
Do you truly really value all the stuff you have, or do you just for habit or fear of change keep it?
If you sold it today, be honest, if you waited 90 days after it left your hand and thought about it once more, would you feel really honestly bad about it or moved on?
That first one sure you have pressure with a move, but things can be kept all tetris style very compacted into a box, and that box in a closet or something so ignore that one.
Now the work is the big one. You do decide to sell that one system, discs, demo discs, magazines the works. Do you value making maybe 40-50% of what you could selling it individually? Or would you rather find anything you can clear $20 on, sell that stuff alone, then take the others and throw it with the system for a kicking bundle many starting out would not pass up? Personally I'd do the second choice, then you can get more of something nice with the cash you would have putting effort into it.
To that last question I made (90 days) just be sure when you know you want to sell it you are positive you don't want it back and you're done, moved on for lack of time, care, or money to bother anymore. Or if need be, maybe realize it's something that isn't going to cost you $50-500 per game to reacquire later so it doesn't matter to let it go because it could be had again without suffering.
About a two years before I moved back to KY (so 4 years ago) I was sitting on 330~ NES games alone, about a 1/3 of that in SNES, 50 N64 or so, same with Gamecube, and other stuff for the PS3 and PSP, a Vita, other stuff. When we decided to have a kid I decided to shift tactics and I have a few times since then. Originally the NES wall just got asinine, used the dough dropping that down to around 50-60 games to get SNES stuff I wanted before the prices got shitty after 2012 closed and I picked up stuff I used to own for systems I kept I missed, tried a few other things out too. I ended up buying/flipping and keeping a few things. That eventually shifted into not caring so much about enough of it to keep and as of now I won't list it, check my signature link and see it, I'm down to 268(physical) games and was at the start of this year around a managed 300-310 from in/out going things. I realized you just keep what you'll use, or you will use again in time for yourself (or your kid(s) if you have them. Keeping a wall of useless wall rotting shit as some trophy to wasted money is just silly.

Re: selling game collections...
I remembered another system I don't use so I'll be selling 2 systems + related stuff.
I'm not trying to keep any special secret or anything about the systems, it's just that I've seen these kind of posts and they really just seem to be a sale thread that's not in the buy and sell forum...on any forum, car stuff comic books games or whatever. I don't want to come off as abusing the forum.
so... what I want is a good balance of, reasonable money, medium/low work and more open slots in my tetris game of closet space. what I decide to sell I will be happy the new owner has something they wanted that was going useless in my storage space.
after going through my storage locker I can say I agree, one or 3 more boxes isn't much to worry about for the move. I'm not going to sell/goodwill/trash anything of value without taking some time to assess what it is and where to sell it. but I think I'd prefer to sell on forums like this. I'll check sold items on ebay to determine pricing. I'll use this process for the games and models...I don't know what all else I'll unearth in my storage. I found some Star Wars figures still on the cards, but they aren't that old. I will try to do sell as bundles, but I know when I'm buying, I don't really want to by 5 things to get the one I'm missing. so I may just toss in a freebie here and there.
I'd like to take the edge off the cost of a new 60" 3D tv. I can afford that either way, but it'd be nice to sell some stuff for cover the cost of a wall mount. I don't know what all systems I'll end up with in my setup. but there will be a PS3 and a Saturn. it really kinda blows that a PS4 cant play PS3 games. oh well.

Re: selling game collections...
Yeah you're thinking clearly enough. 1-3 more boxes won't matter, I did just that and sold more after coming back to KY. You just pace yourself and do it for the best result for you, not the other guy looking to gold dig someone desperate to sell quick and cheap. Your attitude is mine, move the stuff someone will appreciate more you realize you really don't appreciate anymore yourself. Selling on here or other boards is far wiser, if not to save the 10% tax that ebay shoves on stuff including the shipping, but also so you know who gets it is more likely to actually appreciate it too if that matters to you.
Like I said with your stuff, take anything $20 and higher, sell it alone. Whatever is under, is up to you. Perhaps system along with any $1-5 games then throw a few $10-15 titles in there as bait, or even throw one $20ish title (if it were NES like a SMB, Zelda, or Mega Man game) to get attention. Then the other $10-20 games small lots of 2-3 or individually depending how easy they'd sell.
My current selling flurry along with my sharp nes tv is to net a new computer, the 7 year old one in the back is dying my wife uses. I will give her this laptop which is strong, just not gaming strong (she uses photoshop cs6, photographer) for her work, and I'll blow like $1500-2K on a gaming laptop that'll last. I'm 1/2 way there so far, the TV would get me to the low end of that range and the other goodies I have up now online would make the rest.
