eBay/PayPal lost international shipment

Post by retrosportsgamer »

So I made a sale through eBay with an international buyer in the UK; purchased the shipping through PayPal so all the tracking is there. Made it across the pond on 7/22 and Royal Mail tracking shows it being checked in on 7/23 and then nothing since.

Now the buyer puts a claim in through eBay about the shipment not being received. Royal Mail told him "they told me that it's a special delivery which has priority over standard parcels , they said it will be on the system as "in transit" until the 13th (August) and then they will list it missing, it was supposed to of been delivered on the 24th."

The funds for this sale (which already took almost a month to become available) are now being frozen in my account.

Should the package be deemed lost, am I out this money or will PayPal reimburse me given I used their confirmed mailing address and the tracking shows the package being scanned in overseas?

If you went through ebay Global Shipping Program you're covered.

If you went privately but purchased insurance, you're covered.

If you went private and did not purchase insurance - even if it tracks as lost / not your fault, you're on the hook.

Thanks - I'll have to look and see if there's any implied package insurance with the international shipping we selected. Guessing no, so out a good chunk of change.

I guess for future reference, can you purchase insurance through the standard eBay/PayPal postage avenue?

When you list an item, it should default to "use the ebay Global Shipping Program". You must have accidentally unchecked it?

When you use that program - you actually ship it to a distribution center in the states - once it arrives there - they (ebay) assumes all responsibility if it's lost.

If you shipped Priority - you might still have coverage. Priority international to most countries has some level of indemnity insurance included in the cost of postage - usually like $50.

If you used first class - you're definitely out of luck though.

Yeah, unfortunately when I re-listed to deal with the international option, we had agreed to the standard first class so the shipping cost stayed around $20-$25.

Shipping service: USPS First Class Mail Intl / First Class Package Intl Service

Interestingly enough - three months later this made its way back to my front door. Box was beaten around but the packing inside held up and the game was fine.

Is there a note saying why it came back?

Wow that's crazy, 3months later and a couple overseas voyages and it's back where it started. I'd love to know the story on that one if that ever could be figured out.

So did anyone end up out any considerable money on this one in the end?

Stuff like that is why I uncheck the global shipping program + restrict all sales outside of the US from being even allowed. On occasion (1 mo~) I'll get someone to beg me in ebay mail to sell to x country but I just won't do it as I've seen enough horror stories.

What pisses me off is that they make it where you have to MANUALLY uncheck the global shipping, what a load of shit.
