Regardless, you can go to any computer supply store or website (such as Newegg) and purchase a laptop SATA drive for your PS3. You're not forced into proprietary hardware like with the 360.

newegg.com is probably your best bet for finding a cheap hard drive.

all you need is a 2.5 inch SATA HD

here is an article on CNET concerning HD replacement/upgrade

Sort of like how PS2 used any standard IDE harddrive. Mine is fitted with a 40GB drive that came out of a dead computer from like 5 years ago!

No, the 360 hard drive clips on to the top of the system. It uses some weird proprietary interface, which forces you to shell out the cash to Microsoft if you want to do something like get games off the marketplace. And don't get me started on the wireless adapter.

You can put a SATA drive into the enclosure. You just have to mod it. It technically voids your warranty on the drive. But if you get a 20GB hard drive for the 360 cheap and put your own HDD in it you should be fine as MS have no way of knowing that you have modded the drive since you just switch it for the original if you need to claim warranty on the 360.
Also the wireless adaptor isn't necessary for the 360. You can get a wireless bridge for less than £25 in this country which will work in exactly the same way. You can also use this same bridge for every other ethernet equipped console you have so you get much better value for money.

If you wanted to you could even get a Linksys WRT54GL for about £40 and plug up to 4 consoles into it (over ethernet) then install DD-WRT and change it to act as a wireless bridge. (I use this method).
