I had a job around the time with that style mic too. The headset was bulkier though. The brand was Plantronics. If you seach for Plantronics Voice Tube you could maybe just buy one of those and then rig it up to whatever else earpiece you have handy and get the effect you're after.MrPopo wrote:Yes, that style of mic is real. Re: Random Thoughts Thread
So one of the esports guys on campus invited me to join their club. (Which means he asked if I played video games, gave me a flyer, then told me its cool) I'd be interested, 'cept they only play LoL and Dota. No Starcraft? No fighting games? No FPS games? I mean really.

As someone who used to run one of these clubs, yeah, that is what the trend has been for the last few years. Before that, we were playing a lot of FPS, though back around 2004 or so, there was a lot of variety in what these clubs played(had been since the one at Auburn University formed in 1996).Forlorn Drifter wrote:So one of the esports guys on campus invited me to join their club. When I looked up some of the other schools, they had a much larger variety. I just find it stupid to so heavily focus on such specific games. Especially LoL, because on anything "e-sports" level the competition is heavy as hell.
I don't even know what all games get run on esports though, at least not now. And ever since Xplay and AOTS got sunk I haven't heard anything about it. Nerdist or somebody should make a replacement for G4... better yet, a replacement for TechTV.

I agree with this, I'm up in North Texas and it's a huge pool of LoL players. There are definitely fighting game communities (typically running primarily Street Fighter), but not hosted as a "club", nor do they typically run games that I'm particularly interested in. Those games are just what's big at the moment, though, at least Steam is keeping counter strike somewhat relevant to competitive FPS games these days (and sure, Quake Live making the push to steam (for better or for worse), allows for further accessibility and recognition as well)). Hopefully we see a few more games receive the same recognition LoL is getting in the upcoming years. Mobas are just the hot competitive game at the moment, of which I have 0 interest in.Forlorn Drifter wrote:When I looked up some of the other schools, they had a much larger variety. Re: Random Thoughts Thread
It's a cyclical trend. The same thing has happened with games like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Counter-Strike, etc. Hell, we had to ban StarCraft from the club because the people who came in solely to play it began stealing things. Eventually this will all die down.
It is also worth considering what kind of club this is. Is it PC only? Do you think you could suggest games to start branching out with? How many members attend, and is it a bring your own machine affair to do they provide for you?

How do you use "payola" in a phrase? Are you ON the payola? Is something LIKE a payola, THE payola or A payola? :/
