Self Check Outs and Half Dollar Coins
I'm a coin collector of sorts. It's always fun to buy a Coke at a gas station and pay the young cashier with a few JFKs. I've had the police called on me! They just laughed and explained I was offering real money. As far as I know, anything with the words "In God We Trust" is legal tender.
My local Wal-Mart has the self checkouts and believe it or not they accept half dollars, you insert it like any other coin, despite the size of them. (They are huge, in case you've never seen one.)
Anyone else have experience trying to spend these large coins at self checkouts? And a word of advice, if you have a JFK half dollar, and it's dated before 1971, it's worth much more than face value...because those actually contain the precious metal Silver. Only sell those to coin dealers.

Re: Self Check Outs and Half Dollar Coins
Have to add, the weirdest rare coin story I have ever heard, was the lady who tried to pay for her groceries at Wal-Mart with 14 $20 Gold Double Eagle coins. Those are 90% real gold, worth $20 way back in 1849...you do the inflation! She didn't know the value, but a bank teller did and he bought them off her for much less than their value. Bank Teller was fired and lady was arrested for stealing the coins.
The $20 Gold Double Eagle Coins are worth roughly $1,000 each. This lady tried to pay for her groceries with over $12,000 worth of gold.

When I used to work at Blockbuster, we had an old penny come in. Looked very different than what we had now. Sold it for $15 (which was the book value).

My dad has a business license to sell used vehicles on the side from being a Crane Operator. He was paid with 4 $500 dollar bills a little while back.BogusMeatFactory wrote:When I used to work at Blockbuster, we had an old penny come in. Looked very different than what we had now. He sold those bills and received around $3,000 for them. About a 50% profit on the bills alone

Re: Self Check Outs and Half Dollar Coins
Damn thats crazy. Dollar gold coins!
I like to collect coins too.
I'm always snooping around my registers at work digging out old coins and trading them after my shift.
I've done it for fun since not many coins are worth much. Mostly stuff from the fifties and sixites.
A few years back some old person paid with silver dimes and quarters. It was during the holidays. I only found out when I had to ring someone up at the exit. I separated them and pleaded with the manager for me to take the right away. She let me. And I got about 3 bucks of old nickels pennies dimes and quarters.
Which I subsequently lost a year ago when my house got broken into. Which fucking sucks! I lost most of my coin collection there. About 20 bucks in old coins. THe bastard theif didn't even take the pennies.
I've picked up more again. ever so slowly. Old coins are appearing less and less in circulation.

Re: Self Check Outs and Half Dollar Coins
Around here, I know a guy who is a huge coin collector and said the same thing. Him and many others like him have gone around paying with some of the less valuable coins to try and stir up interest in the hobby and to get more in circulation. Seems like everyone who collects has collected it all.flojocabron wrote:

Re: Self Check Outs and Half Dollar Coins
Do you know exactly what type of coins? A JFK half dollar from before 1971 is worth around $10. That's about 20 times face value. Coins were minted with actual gold and silver back then, so the value is always more.flojocabron wrote:Damn thats crazy. Dollar gold coins!

Re: Self Check Outs and Half Dollar Coins
it doesn't matter since they're long gone.
I did have some Kennedy coins from different years. Also a few Benjamin franklin 50 cent coins too.
Five or so of Eisenhower dollars.
About 6 or 7 silver quarters from before 1964
about three bucks in silver FDR dimes and liberty head dimes.
close to a dollars worth of ww2 silver nickels.
Still pisses me off

Re: Self Check Outs and Half Dollar Coins
I collected coins as a kid. Never really had anything all that valuable, though my grandmother had a ton of old coins that are probably worth some cash... I nominally own 1/3rd of them (she died a few years ago and my brother's supposed to split them between himself, myself, and our other cousin -- but I doubt he has. Not maliciously, mind you, just out of a lack of time and caring on any of our parts)
Wonder where they are? Probably down in my parent's basement, everything's down there...
Coolest thing I have (which has since been appropriated by my dad for display in his bedroom) is a roughly 8x10 frame with "Coins of the 20th century" -- one of every US coin minted in the 20th century (of course, this frame was created in the late 90's so it's missing the dollar quarters from 99 but hey). My parents also gave me a bunch of proof sets, I have one from every year between at least my birth and 18th birthday, probably more, I forget.

Gunning for a licensed NES NTSC-U set, follow the madness and poverty here!

Re: Self Check Outs and Half Dollar Coins
I just check my JFK silver dollar coin that I carry around with me. Dated 1776-1976. Darn :/
Edit: its Eisenhower
I work at a convenient store, and I've had this customer who on several occasions paid for his beer with old coins. He once purchased with 10 E.PLURIBUS. UNUM coins dated between 1921 and 1923. They feel rather heavy. Are these worth anything? If not, they sure look cool to me.
