GOG.com is doing beta tests for it's multiplayer servers that will be used by their new GOG Galaxy app. To my understanding anyone, as long as you have a GOG account, can sign up before the offer is expired to receive a free copy of the game Aliens vs Predator Classic 2000 that runs using those same multiplayer servers.
Just fyi, I posted this in general gaming instead of the PC forum to make sure everyone could see it before the time limit expires on the offer.
Aliens vs Predator Classic 2000 - Free for the next 41 hours

Oh my god you can still play Aliens Vs Predator online??? Man I haven't played this game since 2005. DO WANT!
EDIT: looks like the game is free for 48 hours does that mean you can only play the game for 48 hours? or is the offer only available for 48 offers but once you download it you have it forever?

You don't actually get the game immediately upon signing up. They're going to wait a couple days for the offer to be over, then send out codes to everyone who signed up for the beta test. GOG has given away free games before, many times in fact, and they always let you keep them for good.

Re: Aliens vs Predator Classic 2000 - Free for the next 41 h
I've never used GOG before and I never really haven't PC gamed since like 2006, I have semi modern PC from like 2011 with like 10 gigs of ram but a pretty crappy video card, never bothered to upgrade it but I'm sure it could probably run Alien Vs Predator right? I mean my 2005 Windows XP laptop could run that game at max settings. So I should have no issues right?

Most likely yeah. The version they are offering came out in 2010 with fixes to run on modern hardware and OS, but you shouldn't have any issue. And a lot of the GOG catalog is older stuff that is worth checking out.ninjainspandex wrote:I've never used GOG before and I never really haven't PC gamed since like 2006, I have semi modern PC from like 2011 with like 10 gigs of ram but a pretty crappy video card, never bothered to upgrade it but I'm sure it could probably run Alien Vs Predator right? Ditto, the game hasn't been updated in any way that should effect the performance from your video card.Ack wrote:Most likely yeah. Plus it's free, so there's no risk in giving it a shot. ;D

I got that email too and I have no interest in online but I very vaguely remember people talking it up so I clicked for a freebie tag on this. I'm curious to see if it would be fun for me or not as the only game along this line I ever bothered with a little was the Capcom arcade game.

Just signed up for GOG, some SOB already took the gamertag Ninjainspandex
Really stoked about playing AVP again, a couple years ago I tried pirating a copy but I couldn't get the game to run on my Windows 8.1 PC. I assume this sort of thing is a non issue for GOG games.

For the most part. There's a handful of games that don't run on Windows 8; Conquest Frontier Wars is one I know of in particular, as I have it. I ended up having to set up a VM for it. Fortunately, the game isn't too resource intensive so it plays good enough.ninjainspandex wrote:Really stoked about playing AVP again, a couple years ago I tried pirating a copy but I couldn't get the game to run on my Windows 8.1 PC. Nope, it shouldn't be. Part of the charm of GOG is that they update all of their older games to run on modern OS's like Windows 7 or 8. They even make as many games as they can work on Mac and Linux as well.ninjainspandex wrote:Just signed up for GOG, some SOB already took the gamertag Ninjainspandex![]()

I remember there being a list of some 14 games that couldn't work on anything newer than Win XP, but that was over a year ago when I saw that list. And 14 out of a library of over 600 isn't bad in my book.
