I don't think that people are always looking for something to get offended about, but I do think that arguments about things like the Redskin's name is widely perceived as nit-picking because it doesn't concern or offend them. Most people accept things as they are because that's how they've always been. Or, maybe they perceive the issue as frivolous in the big scheme of things when compared to the turmoil in the middle east, the health care crisis in America, the widening economic gap in America, etc. To them, football is a way to disconnect for a few hours a week and just enjoy themselves and they don't want their one refuge to be brought into the political arena.

There are times that I also think America is becoming too politically correct. But, then I think about how I would feel if I were the one on the end getting offended. I know that I would be offended if a team called themselves the Yokels and their mascot wore cut off, frayed overalls with no shirt, missing teeth and a straw hat. Because this is the stereotype of people from Appalachia. When in fact a large majority of the people I associate with are college educated, some with multiple graduate degrees and I honestly don't know, nor have I ever seen anyone that fits that description.

In the end, though, it is impossible to please everyone, but, I think we should give it a good effort. Especially when it comes to racism and the breaking down of those old ideas of acceptable behavior.

If you haven't seen hillfolk in Appalachia, you're not looking hard enough.

I'm of the opinion that words are used for reason and aren't simply words and people have the right to be offended by certain words given the context.

If Jason Mewes called me a "Disgusting little cunt" I would laugh. Not so much from other people.

Just be civil.
I suppose I can agree with that to an extent, but I think you can use your same theory in this case, can't you?

Someone calling you a "disgusting little cunt" is, by and large, a direct attempt to offend and upset you. A team name that's existed for decades is not a direct attempt to offend and upset a group of people. The fact that it does upset them is unfortunate, but it's not what the intent of the name was when it was chosen.
