And now, this thread summarized with emoticons! You're welcome.

No id... :( Id costs money... Earn less money than a couple trips to Mcdonalds would cost... Receive id... :D  WIN!

Seriously, could we stop acting like everyone in the blue collar or even the no collar workforce is a complete idiot and can't manage to find a way around this issue, if they really want to vote?

Red herring fail.

I vote without an ID as well - because i've completed the (more time consuming and intrusive) steps to register in advance. I'm pretty sure we are discussing people who are too lazy to even do that and can vote day of, regardless of pre-registering, if they provide an ID.

No, I mean.

You seem to be the only one hung up on poor.

I say lazy. You say lazy poor. Don't project your own assumptions. They are not one in the same to me - maybe check that speck.

Meanwhile, you consider them too simple to overcome even the most trivial of tasks. I am a bleeding heart liberal, but this is just ridiculous. Yes, they face obstacles that are seemingly or sometimes actually insurmountable, obtaining an id card is not one of them.

There will always be extenuating circumstances and I'm sure a small group of people might be incapable of working it out due to reasons like work schedule or no additional funds, is it a greater number than the thousandth of a percent of voter fraud you dismissed? How can we know?

I have had to have a valid photo id for every job I have ever had. It may not be a law, but it sure as hell minimizes your options for working if you don't have one.

The problem, as has been pointed out several times, is that many of those without an ID lack the financial resources (time, transportation, money, etc.) to get one. The number one cause of NOT having an ID is POVERTY, on which other factors like race, ethnicity, literacy, etc. also stack. This isn't debatable, really - it is why people don't have IDs.

By continuing to insist that people don't have an ID don't have one because they are mostly lazy draws a parallel between poverty and laziness that is reflective of a long-held stereotype about the poor. Many of those in poverty, by the way, work longer hours at harder jobs than those in the middle class...

I don't know of a single recent study, but there are multiple resources showing that it is the biggest obstacle. Here's a good selection:

"She doesn’t have a photo ID and cannot obtain one in North Carolina without a birth certificate."

Weird. My friends used to get fake ID's in NC with a signed Bible and a credit card statement.
