This movie is famous in the radio industry because it's such an accurate portrayal of how things really work. It's really filmed in real radio studios; stations really do run on a shoestring budget; PDs really do get specific about how you pronounce the call letters. Whenever our PD starts to act a little too controlling, we say, "double-yuu enNNNNn Bee Cee" in reference to Paul Giamatti's portrayal of Kevin "pig vomit" Metheny (rest in peace).Luke wrote:PRIVATE PARTS Ego stroking, bottom of the barrel crap. What was the last movie you've seen?

My woman and I painted a blue sky with puffy clouds on the ceiling of the bedroom. It makes us happy.

The movie is accurate in that it was filmed in radio studios. The movie is accurate that budgeting is tight in the field of work. PD's do get specific about pronunciation.
That should go without saying. The rest of the movie is hampton howard stroking his dick as usual.
"Look how groundbreaking I was!" ....Paid actors and actresses on his sets.
"Look how great I am to my wife"....Divorced because he cheated on her over and over.
Listen. I understand movies. Fiction. All fiction.
But when people drink the Kool Aid I get upset a bit. How dumb are the people who think this is what happened? They have to be really, really dumb.
The movie even tries to tell people it is full of shit, and people take is as gospel. Good on Howard, bad on humanity. The wigs, the sketches (the movie is not cohesive one bit), the makeup, the acting...It's so terrible that it astounds me people don't realize it's a pile of whatever howard wants to say it is.
Believing almost anything in the entire movie is the equivalent of believing chirss angel can levitate.
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Really, why? I don't have any reason to think that Stern made up substantial parts of the book or the related film, and certainly there's not anything out there (after some quick Google-fu) to suggest a need for super-skepticism about the veracity of the book or film.Luke wrote:

In all truth, for a lot of the stuff in both the book and the film there are/were eyewitnesses and/or audio/video recordings by people to confirm stories and moments in Stern's rise to fame. I am sure there are many would love to debunk Stern and/or sue for defamation…and would have latched on to opportunities to do so if he was making shit up left and right...

You don't think he paid off "guests" in nearly the exact same way producers pay off people on reality shows?
Come on man. The guy has always made his money on pulling wool, and he's one of the best at it.

I think you like to find conspiracy theories and make unfounded claims about hoodwinkery in all kinds of success stories, and that Stern's story is just another such case...Luke wrote:dsheinem wrote: In all truth, for a lot of the stuff in both the book and the film there are/were eyewitnesses and/or audio/video recordings by people to confirm stories and moments in Stern's rise to fame. If you want to argue that he's making up shit, you need more than "c'mon man, isn't it obvious!?!?"
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Would it have been a good movie if it stuck to only the facts?
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I don't like to find them, but I can smell bullshit when it is obvious.dsheinem wrote: I think you like to find conspiracy theories and make unfounded claims about hoodwinkery in all kinds of success stories, and that Stern's story is just another such case...

Wish the viewaskew and newsaskew forums were up as people went into depth at exactly which calls were scripted and which ones weren't. Those guys listened to Howard religiously most of their lives and would list them daily.
I'll do some digging, but I can assure you a lot of the calls were scripted and completely bull turd. I recall that the celebrity sound board calls were mostly all rigged.

Fugured you'd respond with something about how "obvious" things were instead of with support for your claims
i have no doubt Stern has scripted parts of his show...he makes this pretty clear with regularity. But, I do think that the film represents a pretty accurate account of Stern's rise to fame...and that it features few if any "scripted" calls that are passed off as "unscripted" calls. It's been years since I've seen the movie, but iirc the celeb board stuff isn't even in it...not sure what in it is "obvious" "bullshit".
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
That was intentional. You said "can't call it obvious" to which I did. I thought my intentional response would have been obvious.dsheinem wrote:

I'll give it another go:
PRIVATE PARTS is a nearly two long hour commercial for Howard Stern's radio show where we watch the protagonist (Stern) run the gauntlet of every richer revolving doors. His main struggle is oddly, trying to fired to land a job that will make him more money. Spoiler: He does.
The aesthetics of the film are, well, goofy. Goofy to the point that the only character that appears to be real has fake breasts.
This film's goal is without a doubt is for you to like Stern. He's a caring family man, a go getter, rose from the bottom, and loyal to his career and wife.
PRIVATE PARTS follows Stern's "run" for Governor of New York where he sold more merchandise than votes. Much like his run for office, his movie seems empty and only an opportunity to line his wallet.
In 2014 (or back in 2001) we know Stern is plenty rich. His would be targets are now comrades, his wife now ex-wife, and his bits...well, somehow they still survive.
Gene Siskel had a Golden Rule about movies: If you'd rather have dinner with the cast than watch the movie they star in, then the movie failed.
I'd jump a mile for the chance to have dinner with Stern.
