Back to the topic, the biggest problem with Earthbound is that the art direction and humour can't disguise the fact that it's pretty much a Dragon Quest clone. You can only laugh at the New Age Retro Hippy so many times before you realize it's the game's equivalent of a Zubat or a Slime.

A Zubat with awesome music. :D

Earthbound has a lot of interesting touches, but the dull combat kills it for me. I haven't been able to play RPGs lately because there's just too much combat and the combat is typically grindy and boring. The thing is, though, for a SNES RPG, Earthbound's combat system is particularly disappointing. There were many other RPGs out at the time doing much more interesting things with battle systems.

There's less tedious combat in EarthBound compared to other similar games of the era due to no random encounters + automatic victories against weak enemies. Not too much grinding needs to be done either. Compare this to Breath of Fire, Final Fantasy II, Lufia, Dragon Quest V, Phantasy Star II, Vay, etc...

I dig the menu-based combat with static enemies. It's simple and it works well; I wish it was present in more modern games to be honest. Though I can certainly see why others don't like it.

The automatic victory system is excellent. Such an innovative feature that strangely never gained traction.

OK, I will definitely give them due credit for that.

The algorithm for the auto win is kind of interesting; it assumes that everyone does a basic attack, and if everyone that is faster than the enemy does enough damage to kill them all then you win. It also counts the fact you'll get a free turn on a preemptive.

Yes yes, really wish the auto-win was something everyone picked up on. So much Nintendo stuff gets aped, wish that was one of them. Tedious RPG battles with weaklings is a time sucking pain in the ass Earthbound took out of the equation. It does make the game easier to go further in before stopping for some reason or another.

don't like the combat system? how about trying the auto fight function?

a couple years ago i was playing the japanese version (mother 2) with a japanese speaking friend of mine who is a very casual gamer (except for street fighter 2, heh). since we were enjoying the script more than the fighting, he would always choose the auto fight function in battle just so we could get back to the story. really, the story, the characters, the music...superb.

from a hardcore gamer standpoint, it's blasphemous i suppose, but if you don't like the battle system it's a nice way to sit back and do some small task while the computer fights for you (assuming you have sufficient items & healing PSI, etc)

mother 3 has an improved battle system based on the background music, which is really fun. regular attacks done to the beat of the battle song result in long chain combos. the fan translation is amazing and i recommend it to anyone who is a fan of 16-bit RPGs in general. the same translator also retranslated mother 1 (aka earthbound zero) for GBA, and this is the version to play. the first game is very old school and not on the same level as the sequels, but if you enjoy earthbound and mother 3, i would play the mother 1 GBA translation.

the stories for the 3 games are only loosely connected, so you can pretty much play them in any order. i suggest you play mother 3 after earthbound, then play mother 1.

Just checked and there's a hack to improve the controls:
