need help with a Atari 7800 UPDATE

Post by mas »

Hi everyone,
Was at my local retro store and one of the clerks told me to try to test it but doesn't have any controller's or ac adapter. Its the Atari 7800.
Now I need info or does anybody have parts for this or extra games?
He said he couldn't get it to work and I asked if he had parts but said no.
How did they test it in the first place? If they did have parts, then what are or is a major flaw about the 7800.
So can anyone give me any advice or have extra parts to sell

I bought one used a couple weeks ago on a similar deal. "Didn't work/Couldn't test". It came with a TV/GAME switch that I couldn't get to function at all. I used a NES RF unit instead and it works just fine. The power supply may be a tricky one to find. I've never seen anything with a similar connection. If you're handy, you could probably hack one together, or just wire one directly to the system. If you want to go that route, I can give you the specs off my adapter.

New to it myself, so i'm unaware of any common failures in the system. But i'd say unless you really wanted that one, i'd stay away from it and look for something tested.

It does play 2600 games though, so even if you have no 7800 games, you should be able to find something to test most of it out with.

Without the power supply I would skip it. Those are hard to find and not cheap when you do. In some cases it's cheaper to mod the power input then buy one but since you don't even know if it works I would pass.

Looks like there is a company making replacement power supplies over on Amazon. Price isn't to bad at $14 shipped and while it only has 3 reviews they all seem to be positive.

The 7800 has an RF out via RCA jack. Just get an RCA to RF adapter. The power jack can easily be modified if you don't want to use the specialized connector. That Amazon link is a decent price, even better then the used one listed!

Yeah the used one is jacked up because it is a "official" power supply. I have 3 official power supplies for my 3 Atari 2600 variants and... they are all dead as a door nail. So I say screw worrying about first party cords when a decent quality 3rd party supply is available  .

looking around Google it looks like the Sega controller will work but only registers one of the two buttons that the standard 7800 controllers had. So I guess technically it would work for the games designed for a single button as well as the 2600 games maybe? Not 100% sure though since aside from 2600 stuff my area is dry as a bone when it comes to Atari stuff so that's all I have aside from some random scraps :P.

I have the 7800 and have used an assortment of 2600 controllers and the Segas Genesis controller. Confirm only one fire button on the Genesis gamepad works which covers many of the 7800 games. The 7800 has the uniquness of Two Player on the screen at once on many of the old Arcade Classics which are close renditions to the cabs. Too bad the 7800 downgraded the sound chip compared to the earlier 5200.

OK system works. Went back to the store where I got the system from and showed the clerk what the 7800 adapter looks like and bought that and the new rf which is snowy but game works.
Which fr do I need for this to make picture clear?
Got joust, food fight, space invaders 2600, pole position 2, xevious, 99 cents a piece
