My brother worked for Toys R Us for a bit and disliked it. He says they over hire and skimp on shifts/hours due to the high worker turnover. This wah, if someone quits or doesnt show, they aren't burned too badly.

So expect inconsistent hours. He did interview with a group. They sat them together and went over some stuff, then called each one individually into an office for some individual questioning.

The Good
I got a raise of $0.35.

The Bad
My hours have been cut dramatically.
Due to my hours being cut, I'll lose my full time benefits including health insurance by November.
My Halloween vacation has been denied, so I once again will have to work on my favorite holiday.

The Bottom Line
It's time to look for a new job.

Ticked - DJ and photographer dropped from my wife's friends wedding, two days before the event. So I was asked to cover for both...

Smiled - Despite not having done it in a while, I still have the capabilities to make something like this happen in under two days for under their budget.

I just hate wedding photography.

2 or 3 interviewers for a stocking, cashier or janitorial position that pays $7.40? HIGHLY unlikey

I love the word "unlikey". Adorable.

So Fragems, I spoke with might as well be a district manager manager. In short, the dudette who runs HR for the toys who are for us.

Here is what they are aggressively looking for:

Back in House = people who don't like people

Assemblers = people who like putting stuff together, but don't like people

Maintenance = people who don't like people, but do like polishing toys

Sales Floor aka Front House = People who are cashiers or "toy technologists"

If you filled out an application and didn't check almost every box, you most likely won't get a job. Availability is key in both front and back house, despite hourly requirements. In short "no checks, no jobs".

Toys, from janitor to manager, do in in fact have large group interviews. 50% are cut in the first round. Expect 25 applicants per interview, and expect 8-10 to get an additional interview.

Things that will get you hired or not (should be common knowledge, but...)

1) Attire. Jeans= please leave. Wearing a blue or red polo (company colors) is a plus.

2) Any Excuses about anything on your resume.

3) Talking. Seriously. Shut the fuck up unless you are asked a question.

4) Be able to sell any product on a shelf. And yes, "even" the janitors are asked to do so. Toys R Us thinks Janitors are important. Crazy huh?

5) Enthusiasm is key. Even those janitors who aren't air control dudes

6) Be prepared to pick out one toy, and sell it, infomercial style. Don't just sell the product, but the line. So say "This Star Wars Rebel Tie Fighter goes great with Tie Fighter Wrapping paper, and we also have cards with a Tie Fighter theme". And yes, even the lonely and rock kicking perilous janitors are asked of this.

7) TEAM PLAYER. "It's my job, but it's all our job". Toys R Us has a shit ton of people on the floor at all times and it is key for communication to flow with ease. "I'm committing to my team" will go a long way.

8) Be nonchalant. The company, as an entity, doesn't like a nervous pervous. You sell toys to kids...so don't be weird.

9) Every position in Toys R Us is open for hiring, but not every position is available.

Hence all the group interviews.

Even the janitor can expect two interviews, but an offer for another interview is a good sign as it can take three interviews for mid-management. The main advice I can suggest is to be available at all times, and know what you sell. Dudes are very strict on applications, and they don't give an inch afterwards. "Even" to janitors.

dam toys r us seems picky. along time ago when i looked for those kinds of jobs if you got an interview you basically had the job, unless you were a moron. i would think jeans and a polo would've been gtg.
