Deus Ex- does it stand the test of time?

I tried playing it a year or so ago, and while I really want to like the game, it has not aged well at all. I love Human Revolution to death and think that if somebody wants the core Deus Ex experience that's what they should just start out on. I think I made it about 2 or 3 hours into the original.

It's just so incredibly clunky to play now. All the ideas I love in Human Revolution are there and all the mechanics are there. They just aren't realized in a way that I find enjoyable these days. It feels like it was simply too ambitious for its time.

A re-creation of the original in HR's engine would be great. There's so much to like about Deus Ex, but it's all trapped under clunky gameplay and presentation that more and more people can't get past.

Wasn't one of the better things about Deus Ex that you actually had to commit to choices? In HR it's so easy to farm XP and not really be held back by any circumstance. I love HR, don't get me wrong, but I thought the first one did some hardcore RPG things that haven't been done in the series since. And I don't by any means find it unplayable.

Last summer, about a month or so before my sixteenth birthday, I picked up Deus Ex on GOG.
Now it's at least my 5th favorite game. The graphics didn't get to me (granted I've only played about seven games made in the past two years, so that should be expected) even though I had to put it on lowest settings to get it to run at a decent speed on my mom's laptop. I never thought the gameplay was clunky, in fact I really enjoyed it. I'm on my second playthrough, a pacifist run with Shifter. So far, it's the only game that I've attempted to replay after I've beaten it.

I haven't played the original Deus Ex since finishing it circa 2001. But I do remember the game very fondly and I'm betting it's still fun today. I loved how every mission had multiple ways to complete it, and your dialogue choices actually affected the plot. Also it was cyberpunk and I'm a total sucker for cyberpunk.

Considering your avatar if you're a fan of the old Thief games, the original Deus Ex is right up there with them along with System Shock 2. The best of the best right there.
