Let's talk about the Yu-Gi-Oh video games?

Post by ninjainspandex »

When I was a young teen I was obsessed with Yu-Gi-Oh, had all the cards watched all the Anime, but sadly none of my friends had any interest in the game. Then I discovered Yu-Gi-Oh Eternal Duelist Soul on the GBA. Have really fond memories of this game, I probably sunk a couple hundred hours into it. Anyone ever play these games? I know there were a few others on the GBA and a few more on the DS. I wish to start playing these games again but where should I start? Apparently there is a 3DS game that just released but it is digital download only so that is not an option.

My first Yu-Gi-Oh! game was "Yu-Gi-Oh! Dark Duel Stories"(GBC). It came with three cards: Blue Eyes White Dragon, Dark Magician and the head of Exodia. After this game, I was hooked. I bought a lot of the imported manga even though I couldn't read them (Luckily, Shonen Jump started translating them).

After that I picked up "Yu-Gi-Oh! The Eternal Duelist Soul"(GBA) and was absolutely stunned at the amount of cards available. This game soaked up a ton of my time. Needless to say, I went ahead and bought "Yu-Gi-Oh! Worldwide Edition: Stairway to the Destined Duel"(GBA) the very next year. That might have been the one I played the most (although I may have played Eternal Duelist equally as much).

I played a few console versions as well, but handheld was really what I stuck to. I rented "Yu-Gi-Oh Forbidden Memories"(PSX) a LOT, but looking back now I don't think I enjoyed it all that much. I enjoyed "Yu-Gi-Oh! The Duelist of the Roses"(PS2) much more, but even that didn't keep my attention for very long. I bought "Yu-Gi-Oh! The Falsebound Kingdom"(GCN) just before Katrina, but never got the chance to play it...

Since I dabbled in the manga series, I learned that Yu-Gi-Oh! was a lot more than just a card game. I was super excited when Dungeon Dice Monsters hit the anime series. I bought a ton of Dungeon Dice merch, and played the hell out of "Yu-Gi-Oh Dungeon Dice Monsters"(GBA). My excitement grew even more when I learned that "Yu-Gi-Oh! Capsule Monster Coliseum"(PS2) actually made it to the US. However, marketing on that game must have been awful, because I didn't learn about this until almost a full year after it's launch. Unfortunately, as with "The Falsebound Kingdom", I never got to play "Capsule Monster Coliseum" thanks to Hurricane Katrina.

Uhhh... I didn't mean to type that much. I just... really like Yu-Gi-Oh!.

Wow thanks for the info, great to hear someone else loves Yu-Gi-Oh. Really amazes me that there really haven't been any pokemon card games since the Gameboy Color. Seems like they are really missing an opportunity here, the dual screen on the 3DS seems perfectly suited for these sorts of games. Have you tried any of the DS games? I feel like that would be the perfect answer for me since I too prefer these sorts of games on a handheld and the dual screen sounds really helpful.

Agreed. I actually didn't play the real Pokémon card game that much, but I played the Game Boy Color game quite a bit. I would love to jump back in if they made an updated game for the 3DS.

Unfortunately no. After Katrina I didn't play many TCG's and drifted away from the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise. I ended up buying all the manga over again (then lost them all over again), but that was about it. Might get back into it as my younger brothers have taken an interest in it.

Hmm It looks like the PS2 and Gamecube games have really nothing to do with the card game, I'm looking for a game that mostly follows the rules of the actual TGC game like Eternal Duelists Soul did.

Yeah, I guess I should have mentioned that was the reason I don't recall enjoying them much. I stuck to the GBA games because they followed the real rule set.

Gonna do some research on the newer games to see how they stack up. Until then, I actually dug out a copy of Eternal Duelist Soul.

I've been looking online a bit and seems like a lot of people recommend Nightmare Troubadour and Worldwide Championship 2011 on the DS if your looking for a game that sticks to the card game rules. It really is overwhelming with the amount of Yu-Gi-oh games out there haha

yes. I agree. There's a whole lot of rules in the years that have gone by.

I really spent too much time on the GBA game World wide....Destined Duel.

man that was a long ass title.

Play that one if you want the classic Yugi experience. Portables pretty much follow the trading card games.

They also follow the cards in the cartoons. If you've seen the anime, the main character of each game has those cards in them. So pick a series and go from there.

The early GBA games had a code entry where you can get the good cards early. Instead of earning them over time. If you still have some cards, the number is on the bottom. Just type it in and the card shows up in game. Or you can cheat by looking online.

I havent really played the DS games yet. I have them on My R4. But I take it its the same. But just be aware of the added rules.

If you're going to play on DS, these are the two you want:

Image
Supposed to have the best single player story adventure.

Image
Has the most cards and features and up-to-date completeness of all the DS entries.
PLAY KING'S FIELD.

Why have I never heard of this one?

Personally i have eternal duelist soul(which admittedly i've not played yet  ) and a double pack that has reshef of destruction and sacred cards. Admittedly I spent a lot of time playing one of those(I can't recall which) when I was younger on the way to and from places. I really enjoy this over those ones where you're just playing through a tournament. They're fun but not as fun as the others, even played duel academy and miss that game now(even if I wish it had a exploration feature to it because that would be fun with that island done just right....). The yugioh games though are seriously on my list to play through eventually and actually finish...
