How has James Rolf (aka AVGN) influenced you as a gamer?

Anything that is gaming related that doesn't fit well anywhere else

Are you referring to the nerd character or James? James seems like he's got a firm hold on his projects and his life in general.

The character. It's entirely unfunny and does more harm than good with the whole interest and things in classic gaming. I don't think he's a good actor either. I hear as a person he's a nice guy and all that so no it's not a reality dig, just the crappy youtube personality.

Fair enough. I really enjoyed the show up until around the time he announced the movie. Since then, it's almost like the nerd has become a parody of himself, which is a warning sign that something should be retired. I still give James props for taking his little joke as far as he has though.

This is a stretch.

His numbers are phenomenal and he is a huge upstart Internet video success. Millions of people find him funny and has sparked interest in "retro games" to kids who like poop jokes.

I actually dislike how the nerd eventually became a "character" separate from the "real" James Rolfe. Show was much more fun when it was a guy sitting in his basement complaining about bad games.

btw anyone else see his Ghosts 'n Goblins review? Is his gameplay strategy sound? I'd like to finally finish that one.

Luke come on, numbers don't mean a damn. Look how many people watched that horrible f'n Jersey Shore show on MTV for years. That didn't make it good TV either. It just meant it found a lot of people who wanted to watch a horrible train wreck that lacked quality or any real value.

Yes! I think you nailed it here. If I recall, this was also around the time the movie was announced. The character started to really suffer when James was constantly coming out from behind the camera to do movie updates, convention videos and "making of" AVGN episodes. The illusion was killed.

Speed runs and things like beating Legend of Zelda without the sword or whatever are confusing to me. I mean you can do whatever you want with your time, but it's kind of like when you hear someone say they loved a book so much they've read it 5 times. My reaction is always "All the books out there, and you read the same one five times......."

Never play any video games more than once? Never watched an episode of The Simpsons or Seinfeld more than once? Never watched a movie more than once? Never listened to a song more than once?

If you're not interested in reading something more than once, or just not big on reading fiction multiple times, so be it. But I'm sure there are other things you've experienced repeatedly that are exactly or nearly the same every time, yet you enjoy them again subsequent times.

Yeah I have to concede the point there. I guess everyone has their own definition of how much is too much (duh). Oh well, I'm in the wrong thread anyway lol
