Every video game should come with a way to skip dialogue text or cutscenes.

That actually sounds more like a good idea.

That's probably the most popular opinion I've ever heard.

Those "epic" introductory cutscenes that begin every modern game and last like 10 minutes drive me up a wall.

Also the ability to pause them. Ideally you'd hit a button on your controller and it would pause with "Do you want to skip?" on the screen and no as the default. That way if you wigged out on the button you don't accidentally skip it, but you can easly choose yes to jump back into the game. Leave it on the options and deal with the delivery/bathroom/child/pet/spouse/aliens.

You know what, let's just get rid of cutscenes and dialogue altogether. There's a solution.

Hahahaha no.

The issue with unskippable cutscenes and dialogue is that it can hinder continued gameplay if the player has already experienced them or has no interest in them. We desire this in the interest of allowing the player to expedite his or her experience if so desired. But removing them all together would be far too much of a blanket approach that hinders potential game design and allows for no method of exposition or even an attract mode to catch the eye.

I believe in the past you have said that video games are not an art form in your eyes and that they are just toys, which is fine, as there are plenty of games for you to still play. For those of us who disagree, we like that there is nothing preventing developers from creating games that can convey stories, themes, and ideas through various means, including text, voice acting, and film sequences.

But... But what would be left of Xenosaga then?

Maybe 15 minutes?

Well this thread is meant for unpopular opinions, so you're fair here in saying that.

But I don't agree.
Yeah let's get rid of all talking in video games. It gets in the way of them being toys.

Let's get rid of all vocals in songs. Music's just noise anyway.

Let's get rid of all conversation in movies. Plot distracts you from the flashing pictures.

Let's get rid of all speech bubbles in comics/manga. It's just a bunch of doodles geez why complicate it.

Let's get rid of all text in books. Seriously it's only a wad of paper in a binder.

We shouldn't even have words on the internet. The internet's just a porn conduit come on.

Do you see how ridiculous it all becomes when you boil everything down to its base essence, redacting any and all purpose?

Conveying story is a primordial survival skill our species has relied upon since the birth of communication. That being the truth, any medium (including video games) is going to be used as a conduit for this purpose. And should be, because story gives meaning to the movement of the pixels.

All of your other examples complement the things you've mentioned. In video games, the story doesn't complement, it interrupts. Video games are supposed to be fun and interactive. Watching terribly written movies in between gameplay chunks is neither fun nor interactive.
As an aside, most of the music I listen to is instrumental video game soundtracks. I generally (with a few exceptions) don't care about song lyrics unless they're funny.
