What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

No offense, and you shouldn't take any from this, but it's pretty obvious all you want to do is get through college, get a degree and get the fuck out. Your adviser will help you do this unless you plan on changing your major (which you should. Always change your major once unless you are 100% certain).

So forlorn could probably schedule an advising appointment with a professor over X-subject that he's interested in. They'd provide even more insight than some dude/dudette that doesn't leave the advising center.
No option to swap advisers, based on how they do it here. In my major, there is a group of advisers specific to the major, and any time you make an appointment, you could get any of the advisers. I have a specific one to inform me of certain things and such, but that isn't necessarily the one I will get when I go in.

None of the professors here advise, at least not in my major.

I'm not changing my major though, I can't think of anything else besides this I'd be interested in except something related to gaming, and in that case I'd have to swap colleges, deal with my family shunning me (half serious), and further push myself down alone for ever lane.

Push buttons and rattle cages. They work for YOU. You don't have to be a dick, but you can remind them that you float the bills. A simple "To be honest, I am not happy and expected a lot more from this University" can really stir the pot.

It's your money (or your parents', not sure) so don't waste it.

 You might have my stuff confused with lisalover's.

I don't have any problems, I just hate going to things like this. And our department encourages getting to know everybody and make friends, so I know whoever I get assigned for this is going to try and talk to me and get me to keep coming back, which isn't really going to happen. And if I let any of my "problems" come through in any of my meetings with my adviser, I might end up getting stuck on their list, which means I'll have to come in and discuss my life and how things are going. :x

Hahahaha,

I have heard the "I pay your salary" or "I'm gonna call the President's office" line. Lovely. Yes, a university is fairly bureaucratic and things take time, and not everyone will be happy with everything, but no need to escalate the situation.

You're in your first semester and chances are you're completing liberal studies / general studies. They're usually built into your curriculum so you have some time to explore majors here and there during your first year. As for your department, it sounds like there's an emphasis on networking and building a cohort. It's helpful, especially for first year students to aid in retention at most universities. I wouldn't knock it, even if it's not your cup of tea.

If a student was legitimately unsatisfied with my advising and we were unable to come to a solution through reasoned discussion, I'd invite them to seek an alternative faculty member for advisement and provide them with suggestions based on their interests.

If they came in acting "like they own the place" and/or "own me" I'd tell them to figure out their problems on their own or try coming back when they could act like a respectful human being in an academic environment instead of an irate Wal-Mart shopper at the checkout.

Smile: I got things partially sorted out with the financial advisor, but things aren't set in stone for next semester anymore. Thankfully, I have a little time before next semester. I'm getting started on it immediately, though.
