The nice thing about Doom II is there's no episodes, so you don't have that inventory reset that's so frustrating to deal with.

Finished System Shock 2. Like the first one, it's extremely hard at the start and gets easier as you go along. Same thing with Deus Ex, for that matter. I think I like the first System Shock better than the second; the objectives felt more organic since for the most part you found out about them through audio recordings and stumbling upon places. In System Shock 2 you have the omnipresent mission control voice which removes some of that feeling. Also, the respawns were much more balanced in the first System Shock. They added tension without feeling like a massive drain on resources; something that the respawns in System Shock 2 definitely felt like. Still, glad I've played both.

Had a friend come over the other day and we fired up some Metro Last Light. I didn't want to get into the story mode and ruin anything for him since he's never played either game so we jumped into some of the dlc. I can't remember the name of the one we've been playing but it's amazing. It has you going up to the surface to bring back artifacts so it definitely feels like stalker. Each run to the surface is different and always has you on your toes, and the atmosphere is very tense I'd say even more so than any part of the campaign.

All the dlc for the game is great now that I think about it. If any of you guys liked this game I would definitely grab the dlc or redux if you aren't on pc.

Did a playthrough of Deus Ex again; I got the bug after making my way through HR Director's Cut and did a non-lethal no alarms run. This time I did a heavy weapons playthrough with no computers skill. It's amazing how powerful the flamethrower is, even though it has a very short range. One quick puff and all regular troops are disabled and will die after a bit. The MiBs go down in two cycles of flame (hit once, let them burn out, hit again). The MJ12 Commandos are the only ones that require real effort; you can either do a constant stream of flame (not recommended) or use a rocket on them.

Oh, and speaking of rockets, a Master Heavy Weapons expert can take out anything in one GEP rocket, including the heavy bots.

Next time I play I'm going to try and do a ninja run; only low tech and throwing knives, no ballistic armor aug either.

Nice way to play. That's what I love about it, you may know the story and did every single possible path, but then you can mess around with different augs or even different stat boosts. I only use the GEP near the end in that area where it's nothing but security bots, I preferred the prod and the tranq darts and when available, the silenced pistol. But the flamethrower looks real fun, anything to take those MIBs down a bit faster, especially when you want to save Paul at the hotel.

Well, saving Paul is based on whether or not you leave out the window after he says "get out of here" when the MiBs are preparing to storm the place. If you decide to run in to the pack of enemies holding a live LAM and blow everyone up Paul will survive. If you take them all out without you or Paul taking a scratch, then leave out the window, Paul dies. Paul is invincible to your mundane bullets; only plot flags can kill him.

In fact, if you're saving Paul you're better off trying to knife the MiBs to death to save on ammo. The second the raid on Paul's room starts you will transition to the MJ12 base when you die/reach Gunther.

I finally finished Quake last night. That fourth episode was nasty; it ended up being a precursor of things to come in Doom 3. Lots of use of enemies hidden in pure darkness who wait for you to come by before checking your prostate. And the newly added blobs who bounce around and explode when they die.

The final boss was an interesting idea of having you win through telefragging, but it makes the fight itself somewhat anticlimactic, as the level is set up as a single path to the portal, you blow your way through some monsters with your overpowered lightning gun that has plenty of ammo, then sit and wait at the portal for the telepoint to get inside the boss. There really isn't a press of monsters to force any tension at that point.

Overall I prefer Quake 2 for the single player. I feel like the weapons in Quake were weakly designed overall; once you get the double shotgun and super nailgun there's never a reason to use the previous versions, so really your weapon selection is shotgun, machinegun, grenades, rockets, and lightning. Compare with Quake 2, where the super shotgun has a much slower firerate and a MUCH wider spread than the regular shotgun, giving you reason to use both, and the chaingun chewing through ammo so fast and having the spin up/down delays that makes the machine gun worth using (plus at the high end having railgun, hyperblaster, BFG).

I will say, though, that Quake is AMAZING for speedrunning. Check out Quake Done Quickest on Youtube sometime.

Did a playthrough of Catacomb 3D: The Descent. This is the original one that was done by the id guys. The trilogy of Catacomb Abyss, Catacomb Apocalypse, and Catacomb Armageddon used the engine but was done by Softdisk employees after the id guys split off. The game is definitely primitive, but there's still some interesting stuff going on. The biggest is that midway through the game you enter a hub level where you can then go to one of four different areas. Three of them are intended to help you stock up on items and get hints to be able to beat the game while the fourth leads you further in to the dungeon. During the fourth you enter a labyrinth level that you need the hints to reliably progress through. This hub level concept won't reappear until Hexen many years later.

The nice thing is the game is pretty short, so it doesn't really overstay its welcome, unless you ignore the last hint and make your way into the Twisty Little Passages, All Alike (yay Zork reference) in the last level.

Finished the SP story in CODAW on PS3, and it's basically the same stupid, rehashed Michael Bay-esque formula since CODMW1. The added gimmicks didn't do much for me either. I think some people are desperate for their favourite shooter to remain relevant, but in the end it's just a dumb series.
