That was my inital thought. Twin Peaks. Although, there was a movie, so it kinda counts.

Just got back from Gone Girl. Wow, that was quite the film. I disagree entirely with Dsh's comment about narrative closure.
I didn't see the first twist coming, but it wasn't surprising. The second twist was crazy. The third twist was even crazier.
Also, the trailers for Gone Girl were outstanding. They give enough to hook you without spoiling ANYTHING. I'm still annoyed at the latest trailers for Interstellar. I don't want to know that they DO in fact get to alien worlds and explore them. Maybe that's where the movie ends; man is on the ship and first passes the Oort Cloud, or maybe the ship first enters an alien solar system and it cuts to credits, maybe with a voiceover about humanity WILL go on. There's a whole lot of ways the initial trailer where it's shitty dustbowl earth and Alfred wants the guy from Dazed & Confused to go on a ship and leave his daughter behind could have gone. Now there's just one way. I'm still going to see it because it looks good, but the trailer spoils too much.

I don't know how to describe Gone Girl to someone without spoiling something without just saying "it's about a girl who goes missing."

Watched "The Deep"(1977) last night. Great little action/adventure flick from the 70s with a ton of really nice underwater scenes. The story kind of reminded me a lot of Into the Blue in that the plot centers around treasure and drugs but I think the settings in The Deep are much better plus they spend a lot more time actually diving. The cast is pretty good as well especially liked Robert Shaw who was awesome, and Jacqueline Bisset was smoking hot. On the other hand I really don't care much for Nick Nolte, but I've never really been a big fan of him to begin with.

The story at times is kind of crazy but it was a very fun film, and for $1 it was a nice pawnshop pick up.

On a side note Jessica Alba swimming around in a Bikini doesn't hold a candle to Jacqueline Bisset scuba diving in a white t-shirt. Man I love the 70s.

I'm surprised more people haven't read the book. Or all of Gillian Flynn's books for that matter. I'm worried the movie will be less entertaining, knowing everything that will happen, but I will make a point to see it anyway.

As to Gillian Flynn, I think that Sharp Objects would have made a great movie adaptation as well. I won't be surprised if Gone Girl is a financial success if they pull from her short backlog.

my wife read both of those - not sure about other Flynn. She said going in that she had no idea how this could be made into a movie. I pointed out that Fincher adapted Fight Club. She came out of the movie saying that it was one of the most perfect page-to-screen adaptations she's seen. She loved the book and loved the movie.

The only other Flynn book so far, and her weakest in my opinion, is Dark Places. It wouldn't make the cut for a big budget motion picture (again, in my opinion). It's still a good book though. Gillian Flynn is a really good up and coming author and people should make a point to take notice of her work. Very talented and able to keep suspense, pacing, character development, and story telling in perfect balance without missing a beat. She has an exceptionally dark imagination as well.

Maybe I'll catch Gone Girl in the cinema if I can manage to get a sitter. I was planning on holding out for rental, but if your wife appreciates her work and was satisfied leaving the movie, maybe it is worth a trip. I was surprised to see Rosamund Pike as the casting choice, but not nearly as surprised as I was with Ben Affleck.

Too many shitty actors in your life or are you so dull that can you simply not spot decent acting? It's obviously one or the other.

It's neither actually. I didn't make any disparaging remarks against Pike or Affleck, they were simply surprising choices based on the characters from the book.

We don't all get the inside scoop like you. It's probably hard for someone who knows everything to understand, but us regular folk still get surprised every once in a while, it's a natural reaction.
