So, DDR4 just launched and just as everyone predicted it is super expensive. 16GB for DDR4 2800 is $379.

Man, if i could afford that and possibly one of the new i7's i'd be set though even just 8gb of ddr4 would be nice

hypothetical question: If I ever wanted to upgrade my i3 to an i5 or i7, but keep my same mobo (and everything else), will I still be forced to reinstall Windows?

Nah. It's a good idea when swapping a motherboard due to all the various drivers and things associated with that, but the CPU itself has little to worry about there. There's a chance it'll deactivate Windows, but if that happens, you should be able to call for manual reactivation.

manual reactivation? Like literally have to call Microsoft and explain the issue? Obviously I'm using the Win7 license I got from you - there'd be no issue w/ MS that upgrading the CPU would be a "a different computer" or something if that happened?

Probably not to that point. If it does deactivate, you might be able to just click the "activate Windows" option anyway. The basic manual/phone activation process is automated. It'll give you a code to punch into the phone, then it'll give you a code back to enter into Windows. I've only ever had to do that a handful of times, and I've never had to talk to a human...but nearly everything I work with is using an enterprise license.

It's not guaranteed anyway. Based on some searching around, some people needed to reactivate, others did not.

If you're worried about the hardware signature changing when upgrading anything, you can put windows back into deactivated mode. It'll erase all signature information. Once you put the new hardware in, it'll act like it's a new install and you just do the final setup steps again. It doesn't affect any data.

Even if you were forced to talk to a human, you can just say you upgraded processors. I had an old laptop given to me with no HD at one point and after I installed windows and use the original attached serial, online reg told me to call. I told the person what was up, they reset something, and all was bueno.

I've had to call that number for various reasons both personally and professionally and I've never been given guff or had an issue with it.
