We had a problem with people stealing catalytic converters of of cars around here. Thankfully it has pretty much gone away in the past couple years.

Around here they mostly steal pipes off vacant houses or anything easy to get off like the covers on an AC unit. When I worked at the DOH we used to occasionally leave equipment at work sites. One night a guy actually stole a Roller and drove it to a scrap yard about half a mile away .

More commonly people just siphon the gas out of the equipment and steal the batteries if they can get to them. Pretty much you should expect to find your mower, grader, etc. on empty every morning . No point in getting locking gap caps either since the assholes just poke a hole in the tank to drain it if they can't get to it the easy way.

Only took 3 years, but I finally got around to making some closet doors for the girls room:

Got all the wood cut for the girls bunk beds; the frame, rails, and headboards each have 2 coats of stain and now their first coat of poly:

The ninja course was a big hit at my son's party. The zip line was the favorite - but the post shook and creaked something fierce when my brother-in-law went down it. I've disconnected it from the post and will extend it to a tree instead. The post will serve as just rope climb and fireman's pole instead - will snap a pic once I rebuild them both.

Thanks, gents. My wife hates the pic of the closet doors cuz the poly looks runny - I assure you it isn't, just has a massive shine from being 3 days old and while dry is still not fully fully cured - that combined w/flash from camera...they are incredibly well done (my wife likes to do the finish process sometimes and she did the doors - they look great).

I love to see all the outdoor activities. I agree the back yard is like a park playground or something, really cool. I thought the doors were store bought, that's some nice craftsmanship on your part and the finish looks awesome. Anyone that has worked with stain/sealant on a surface that large knows what a pain it can be to get a nice smooth coat. Between that yard full of fun and all the arcade cabs and games your kids are incredibly lucky.

Man, I would kill for that kind of space to work in. I'm always trying to make some kind of tarp tent to stop leaves, pollen, and other crap from falling on my finished projects before they dry.

The social groups help you form the networks which help you actually get the jobs. The degree isn't quite irrelevant, but it's definitely only a small piece of the puzzle. The old adage of "It's not what you know, it's who you know" is extremely, extremely true.

The softer the degree, the more this is true.

I keep hearing this, but I've been offered jobs just because I was considering being an Aggie. Not necessarily good jobs, but enough that I could live myself. (I'm really not at the point to worry about supporting a family. I'm not getting married anyways though.) In general though, I feel like the whole meeting people thing is blown out of proportion. The majority of people I've met who've graduated from A&M, and the people I've met from here away from school, treat me like a best friend just because I'm from here. If that's all it takes, without even being here a whole semester, I'm not particularly worried about meeting everyone.

Not sure what classifies as "scrap". But I do know that people do in fact steal metals from all sorts of places, including cemeteries, to resell the stolen goods for cash.

I just meant that scrap is exactly that, scrap, finding stuff people are throwing away and turning it in for money. What everyone else is talking about is just stealing metal from where ever and to get cash.

I really hate when people assume selling scrap means stealing. Its a legitimate business, and its actually really hard to sell stolen items at most scrap yards. We've been turned away from selling old kegs from months at a time because the yards were warned about large amounts of stolen kegs and such.
