The social groups help you form the networks which help you actually get the jobs. The degree isn't quite irrelevant, but it's definitely only a small piece of the puzzle. The old adage of "It's not what you know, it's who you know" is extremely, extremely true.
The softer the degree, the more this is true.

Yikes. Seeing the results of people who don't maintain their computers always elicits a cringe. :(

Smile:
Random call from a 404 number (Atlanta area code) on my cell
Me - wait for a moment to see if it is autodialer, "Hello"
Machine - beep
Me - "Crap"
Lady - some spiel about a group she is with
Me - using my flustered business voice "You have the wrong number"
Lady - "I havent said a name yet"
Me - since she didnt hang up "How did you get this number"
Lady - now confused "What?"
Me - "this is an secure line, How did you get this number"
Lady - "Shit" Hold Music starts

I googling the number, they are a pump and dump scam company.

 My mom and brother's girlfriend just lost their jobs. Apparently it's really slow right now and their boss told them they'd be able to work through the winter and now that plan's shot. My mom apparently had other jobs she could have taken but opted to keep her job due to being told she'd be able to work through the winter. If she goes on unemployment she'll apparently only be able to collect unemployment until January or something.

Though my brother's apparently helping this one guy collect scrap metal for cash.

By helping I hope you don't mean stealing.

Wow just read Hobie's IT story, that's good work there! Someone better give you a raise.
