Well I said it's an unpopular opinion didn't I? :P.

Also the key thing is this

I haven't played many games on the PS2, but the ones I did (Final Fantasy X, XII, Kingdom Hearts, Transformers, Spiderman 2, Jax and Daxter) had horrible controls, specially with the camera. And I owned a Gamecube during that generation, and since I played mostly nintendo games I'm used to great controls ;).

Also I just never warmed up to the full 3d graphics of Final Fantasy, so I also have that to be bitter about

I believe that PS2 games have aged horribly, and in fact PS1 games have aged better overall, only because the PS1 had many more 2D games (at least mainstream ones), or had 3D games that played like 2D (think Final Fantasy, Klonoa ect.)

(of course I'm not going to defend PS1 era 3D action games, but I always stayed away from them anyway. JRPGs and platformers were all I needed)
I have to agree with this. To be honest, I think the original Xbox and Gamecube aged better, but I guess the extra year of development gives them an advantage.

Did they fix the shitty controls? Specially Kingdom Hearts, I soooo wanted to love that game. When I played it in 2005 I really did, but when I came back to it in 2013 I was like......meh.

Weird, I never had a problem with camera or controls in KH, just poor timing in the tarzan world...(of course i haven't finished that game yet and have been meaning too)

You misunderstood me. It's not the graphics which I think have aged badly (I mean they are graphics, they can only age), it's mainly the controls. Nah, can't see this. The PS2 has much better 3D control for 3D games than the Dreamcast nevermind the 5th gen consoles.

I recently tried to dive into Kingdom Hearts, giving it another chance and I have to say the game is believably bad in terms of design and controls. Why in the world would you make a game where your core mechanic is, "Find the item!" with constant enemy encounters. I gave up at Alice in Wonderland after spending an hour trying to, "Find Leon," in the hub town and not have that event trigger until you do a certain thing. I ran through the town a bajillion times attempting to find him and failed.

When I got to the Alice in Wonderland stage and had to find the evidence, only to have my party die constantly during random encounters with enemies before I could find a single item made me give up. The game is poorly designed and its only appeal is the fan service it provides.

It's in a weird flux state though. PS1 had some unusual but unique controls for early 3D games because 3D games were just getting popular, so game designers were experimenting. When the PS2 came about, developers had started to nail down certain aspects, such as dual analog support, but there are still some games with control sets that got about part of it and then throw the rest out the window. I may have misunderstood, but I think Zero is referring to games like this, where the controls are at least partially similar but have some interesting quirks that change them from the set 3D dual analog control standard we have today.

For instance, games like The Thing have been really difficult for me to get into, because while there are some aspects of game design that are similar to what we have now and easy to pick up, it's off just enough to throw the whole thing. Or games like Kuon still use fixed camera angles, which is something we've largely done away with.

I will say this though: by the end of its run, the PS2 cements a lot of those game control decisions that we see as fully standardized in the PS3 era. And it sounds like he's had some limited experience with mostly earlier games or licensed games that don't exactly shout "quality."

Yes I agree, but what I'm saying is that the PS1 had more (mainstream) 2D controlled games (even if they were 3D in graphics, their gameplay was still 2D).

basically what I meant was that 3D controls didn't get good till the PS3 imo. Maybe late PS2 as Ack said, but I wasn't there for it. So I would rather play the PS1 games that controlled like 2D games (Tomba, Klonoa, Final Fantasy, Crash Bandicoot (you could say it controls a lot like a 2D game....no?) than PS2 games where, at least the franchises that I followed, went full 3D but weren't really well designed for 3D gameplay.

Not exactly, but I will admit I do find games with "stupid controls" but with the gameplay/levels designed around these stupid controls interesting (see: Tomb Raider, Resident Evil).

On the other hand as I mentioned, it is my personal opinion and I know it's unpopular, and I probably feel this way cause I never explored the PS2's library other than skin deep...but I just keep getting burned by the damn thing every time I try some games on it
