Dumb question BoneSnapDeez, but which version of Popful Mail? I know the Sega CD version is the only one in English, but I didn't know if you've played it before and were giving one of the ports a shot or if you also read Japanese or something.

Yeah, Sega CD. I can read some Japanese so I do plan on playing the Super Famicom and PC Engine CD ports eventually.

I was just reading about Popful Mail online. Apparently there were plans to release it as "Sister Sonic" in the US with the sprites redrawn as Sonic characters + the addition of a sister for Sonic. Kinda glad they abandoned that idea.

Sequence triggers? You mean like a "you must talk to the correct person before proceeding" type of thing? Yeah that's classic retro JRPG. Breath of Fire is a great game. Love the soundtrack.
Yes, as in, "You must talk to this obscure lady upstairs in this house who has nothing to do with anything in order to progress with the plot" and "You must get the 'Rang' upgraded to the 'B.Rang' in order to progress with the plot" kind of nonsense. Majorly frustrating.

I gotta commend the soundtrack, like you said, my favorite aspect of Breath of Fire is that it comes across like they spent their time listening to Squaresoft/Enix/Neverland RPGs and said "We gotta sound different," and they definitely succeeded in doing that.

Also 8 party members in an early 90s SNES JRPG is super fun, I don't care what anyone says

It's really only 5; the rest are fusion fodder.

You misspelled Ys.
Taking a break from Ys for a bit
He's lying. There was a court order. The Ys series put a temporary restraining order on him to make him go play something else.

Yeah, pretty much. Once I started fusing characters, I never stopped.

Truth, Gobi might be the worst character in any RPG ever

Have you gotten the mole yet? Because I recall he made Gobi seem downright useful.

I've been enjoying this game quite a bit up t this point, but a couple of hours attempting some of the mini games that pop-up offering great rewards has convinced me that if I want to keep that opinion, I'd best stick to the main path.

I'm of the opinion that Square Enix's staff couldnt cobble together a mini game with half decent controls for their life. I expect they give the minigame coding duties to the intern.

I'm not big fan of most of the Final Fantasy's series sidequests either actually. I'll stick to the main story.
I did the same thing when I played through the game. (I did defeat all of the totally awesome optional bosses, however.) That said, some people absolutely love blitzball, and think that it is the very best "game-within-a-game". I just did not care for it.

I also hated Blitzball. I ended up going through the process to unlock everyone's best weapon except Wakka's because I didn't want to play that game. So I found out what abilities it had and just made one. That's the nice thing about the item creation system in the game, if you can figure out what you want or what the best equipment is, you can make it.

Also, eventually the grinding gets easier, as you beat some of the uber monsters and then discover you can repeatedly farm them for items you need. It actually goes by a lot quicker than you think.

Not yet, I did get the thing that turns Gobi into a giant fish, which was useful for about 2 seconds
