Yes.
It's bonkerville over here as I actually like a lot of pop music...I usually hate pop music, but hell if some of "today's tunes" don't make me put on me dancin' shoes .

Then you have the full assault of stupid that is a maroon five video. The song is super terrible too, but the video is an insult to stupidity. At its stupidest, our lead singer yells "where's the emergency room!?!" to which a nurse points in a direction.

Heh.

And then our "hero" (I have no clue what role he plays other than making out wit models and distracting doctors and nurses) bum rushes an ER, because, when you're sexy you get to bum rush ERs.

And then there is the song. Now my friends don't like a lot of the music I enjoy. Aphex twin, improv jazz, classical...I get it. It's not their bag. And obviously a shit ton of people love maroon 5, so there ya go. And rarely do I hate a song, because hating music is silly. But I am silly, and I hate this song. It's up there with Tubthumping, I saw the Sign, Thong Song, and everything from coldplay.

^Adore reissue looks beautiful.

I listened to the new Aphex Twin album today. Can't say I feel my life has changed. In fact, and this is only first listen, but I'd say I think that the AFX Chosen Lords album was better to my ears.

Take it for what it is-

Throw this in with some other stuff from similar style, like The Epileptic Hillbillies, Highlonesome, Legendary Shack Shakers, some Goddamn Gallows. (Though I'm not much of a fan of GG, used to really like them until I understood their whole hellfire n' brimstone thing was satire. Ruined it for me. Along the same lines as John Butler Trio, although less obvious. God Will F*ck You Up is still a great song pick for Texas Chainsaw though.)

my first impression is not so glowing. It's good, sure. But it's not great to me. It sounds like it could be outtakes from RDJ Album or Drukqs to me. They're good songs... but we've been waiting all these years for this? Like I said, Chosen Lords sounded like a more cohesive and instantly gratifying album to me than this. And that was basically a "best of" the Analord EP's. Most of it sounds like it is from the same pallet of sounds. Like it could have been recorded by him in the span of a month. I mean, maybe I need more listens. And I will listen. But I'm just a bit let down. Good songs. But not mind-blowing.

Those past thirteen years crawled by, didn't they?

Such great stuff. Incredible compositions, and holy nuts does it sound amazing when blared. My speakers haven't been this happy in a long time.

^reviews around the web are total praise. I waited to read reviews until after I heard it myself. And anyone I "know" who's heard it seems to love it. I'm not sure why it's not clicking with me the same way. My best guess is that subconsciously I probably assumed that the 13 years were spent re-inventing his sound or something. I think I expected something totally next level. But to me it just sounds like "another Aphex Twin record." Which like I said, is good. It's good music. But I also kind of feel like if it weren't for the buildup caused by the long hiatus, those review scores might be a few integers lower.

He has spoiled you. That's the only explanation. At least, it's the only one I have.

I shit you not when I say RDJ may be the last great composer. John Williams is a marketing genius, but in my ears RDJ blows him out of the water. And yes, it can be argued that complexity doesn't equal great music, but I disagree. James is straight up surgical with every fade, every turn of a nob, beats cut off at a fraction of a second. Mathematical at that. His simplest beats makes almost all hip hop seem like immature bullshit.

So yeah, obviously I drink the AP Kool-Aid. But delicious it is.
