The original Xcoms are so much fun although extremely frustrating at first. While the new ones are cool and a lot more accessible I really missed a lot of the things they shaved off. Really missed being able to target anything in the environment, having bullets that actually traveled through the air till they hit something, and the old Action Points system which could really screw you if you didn't know what you were doing. Plus I really missed the randomly generated maps. Haven't played Enemy Within, but Enemy Unknown reused the same maps way to often. Had high hopes for the MP as well but they totally bombed that in EU way to many restrictions on team creation and there weren't many good maps :P.

the publisher had announced that Falling Skies: The Game was coming out on 9/30. So I've been waiting excitedly. However, the Steam Store is updated today and the page for Falling Skies still just says "Release Date: September 2014." C'MON!!!

I've got 3 hrs on it now. As you might expect, the TL;DR version is "it's just like XCOM, but not quite as good." That said, it is fun. It plays just like a Sci-Fi Network series based on XCOM. I mean, they totally rip off the bulk of the gameplay from XCOM. It's insanely similar. Just not as polished. But def worth playing if you're a fan and need more (like me).

Some differences...

-Your recruits are not unlimited all times. In XCOM you can just buy more soldiers all the time. In FS you have to wait for volunteers. So at most you'd have like 4 or 5 to pick up. They cost "food." (Researching med stuff costs medical supplies, researching weapons/etc costs other resources).

-You can constantly send out one soldier on a solo (non-played) mission to scrounge for supplies. This is helpful.

-Overwatch. OMG. You don't know. It's not a given thing everyone can do. It's part of skilltrees that not everyone can upgrade to. Right now I have ONE GUY that can overwatch. So that's pretty much his job. Whereas in XCOM pretty much every move I made ended with overwatch, you can't do that here. Drastically changes the strategy.

-You can rotate the camera even during a turn. This sounds small but it's huge. I always wanted to be able to do it when aliens were moving to get a better sense of their movement. So kudos for this change.

-It def feels easier. Though, I did lose one soldier in my 3rd mission, and failed a mission by killing an escort later when I got up on a rooftop and there were seriously 7 or 8 aliens hanging out up there and I couldn't move my wave fast enough.

-Variance of missions is nice. Some are "kill all aliens" some are "place a bomb here" some are "collect x number of supplies" some are "escort" so it's a little different and nice change of pace.

-Base management is def not as deep. No surprises there. But it's there.

-Health packs are one thing, and defibrillators are another. Health packs heal, but defribs revive fallen soldiers so they don't bleed out. This is pretty big as it means necessitating two separate carriers (so those 2 won't be carrying grenades, etc).

-The environments are sadly not as demolish-able. Though you can still blow up cars.

All in all, good game. Fun game. It's like a low budget take. So far, 3 hrs in, not enough variety in aliens. But it's fun, and has a pretty clear single player story (cut scenes) to go through. I think it's worth playing and I like that XCOM has been so influential to make such a clear ripoff. I hope this furthers proof that XCOM is amazing and fans will want yet another.

Actually it's a DreamWorks program that airs on TNT in the US and on Space in Canada. It's been renewed for a fifth and final season, which will bring the total number of episodes to 52 in the series.

Falling Skies : XCOM :: Mystic Quest : Final Fantasy

Which isn't an insult either. I enjoyed Mystic Quest, and I'm enjoying Falling Skies. I've put it 7 hrs now. Basically it's everything that's in XCOM, but stripped down and simplified. It's also pretty rough around the edges, and even a bit buggy. Which is to say I wouldn't recommend anyone rush out to buy it now, but I wouldn't say it's a terrible game either. As many complaints as I could come up with (and stay tuned, because I will) I'd still have to admit that I'm having fun with this game.
