I'm still unsure why the Yes campaign is shocked by the national newspapers not supporting them. Just statistically it's a niche within a niche with regards their circulation (a circulation of which mostly had no say in the vote anyway).
The reportage could definitely have done with less bias overall (especially from the BBC), though on the other hand a lot of the newspapers and articles cited by Monbiot in this piece generally have exceptionally low daily sales in Scotland. And Monbiot himself is hardly an unbiased voice as he has expressed support for Welsh independence party Plaid Cymru in the past. So did you want fair reporting or just your own opinion echoed back at you?
I think what became clear was that a lot of people who voted NO were people who didn't wear badges or wave flags or actively campaign, they just made their own minds up and went to the polling stations and did what they thought was right.

It would be an oversimplification but it would be hard to deny Catalonian independentism does not have that mentality. It has always been this way, it was a very classist movement since its inception as it possited the idea that the middle class bussinessmen of Catalonia would do better without the impoverished south of the country or everyone else, really.Forlorn Drifter wrote:Essentially, they just don't want to use their money to cover other areas of the country?
One of the ideas that is constantly thrown around is the idea of "Spain is stealing from us" (Compare it to "They are taking our jobs") and complaints about infrastructure being built in other regions with "their money" are common like when they built a very needed highway in Galicia. When it comes down to it, it's just xenophobia, the idea that "your kind" is more deserving of help than those born twenty kilometers from you.
Interestingly enough, since Catalonia is seriously overbudgeted it has actually had to be bailed out by the same central goverment they complain about.

The air campaign against IS has begun, and several mideastern nations are partaking in it.

Not surprising, looking at the list: Bahrain, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. They're either allies of the Saudis and want ISIL under control and Assad out of Syria to curb Iranian influence, or their worried about ISIL infiltration within their own countries.Pulsar_t wrote:The air campaign against IS has begun, and several mideastern nations are partaking in it.

yeah...diplomatic bargaining with the beheaders. The west should face it, since the Ataturk faction lost to the islamic faction Turkey is slowly drifting against it. Heck they didn't even support the sanctions against Russia, even though Serbia which has a lot more to lose from them, kind of did (well....it's complex)The fact that all this happened just as Turkey secured the release of 49 hostages held by IS raises, inevitably, speculation about Turkey's objectives. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s president, says that only "diplomatic bargaining" has taken place

Wow. As they say in the South, "We done fucked some shit up".
96% of all ammunition used were precision targeted, aka, everything went exactly as planned. Pinpoint accuracy.
What has been said at pentagon briefings is that ISIS was near it's execution on attacks on US soil and still provide an imminent threat.
We're not out of the woods yet, apparently.

One thing I hear from some of my family and friends closer to the border is a big worry about ISIS entering through the Mexican border. I don't know how big of a worry it really is, but they are hearing rumors about cartels working with the group, and there has supposedly been an increase in prayer mats found down there. Finding prayer mats isn't that rare, as there has been an increase in Islam groups coming through the border who aren't dangerous. But with everything going on, its keeping some people down there on edge.

Yes the islamists will cross through Mexico, blow up your schools, force your women to have abortions, and worst of all, steal American jobsForlorn Drifter wrote: One thing I hear from some of my family and friends closer to the border is a big worry about ISIS entering through the Mexican border. Honestly, that part of the country is afraid of ANYTHING coming across the Mexican border.ZeroAX wrote:Yes the islamists will cross through Mexico, blow up your schools, force your women to have abortions, and worst of all, steal American jobsForlorn Drifter wrote: One thing I hear from some of my family and friends closer to the border is a big worry about ISIS entering through the Mexican border.
