Roots aside, hip hop hasn't been "all that" on SNL.
I'm in the middle of reading Questlove's autobiography right now. It's a strong reminder of just how important The Roots have been to me for the past 20 years. I'm feeling so geeky a fanboy-ish reading Quest's thoughts on music (including his own) is and realizing he would just overthink all the little tiny things the same way I did - TO HIS MUSIC when I was younger. It's awesome. He's so high on my list of dream dudes to have a beer with and just talk music for hours.
OMG I love that performance. I remember seeing it live, and how it shook me then. And I've watched the clip on YT many times. That same show they also did "Ricky's Theme," which ugh, I just love that song and was so thrilled seeing them do an instrumental on SNL.
And I don't know why I still laugh at it, but a buddy of mine did a sweet set of karaoke to Straight Outta Compton and started with "Straight outta Compton. A crazy cracker named Ice Cream!" For some reason that still gives me belly laughs.

As far as im concerned i didn't want experimentation and shit. I wanted the same ol cypress hill sound and this cd was the start of that decline. The ice cube dis "no rest for the wicked" was prolly my favorite on that album
Like the album, but it was rather watered down, no?
I think this album came out around the same time that their wallets were fatter than usual and B-Real was dating Elektra.
Cypress Hill was great to laugh at becuase they were laughable. Talented, but laughable. But templ of boom had some whack shit left and right. The Cube diss track sticks out as pretty horrible, especially the not-ill timed lyric "cause you don't smoke buddah!".
And don't get me started on the rap-rock crap they put out. Loved those guys in the Up In Smoke Tour. That was legit.
That, and Cypress Hill put on one of the funniest SNL performances ever. I don't think they even knew where they were.
I just liked the beat and thought making fun of ice cube bit was funny. I think the whole thing started because cube stole a hook from one of there songs or something. But there really wasn't much to like on that cd anyway. The whole rock cd wasn't to bad, not much worse than body count (which has a new cd out) . "rock star" stands out. Shit i thing dj muggs even did a dubstep album for christs sake lol.
ice t can play the part but as a lyricist he can say some wack shit. like forcing stuff to rhyme that shouldn't go together or be a few words short in a sentence so it can rhyme breaking up the whole flow of the verse. his shit is just a mess.
