pretty sure its using Netflix servers same as using a tablet or smartphone.

I hope so. I've got 2 Wii's in the house, and both of them are used for Netflix and Youtube more than for games in all honesty. Heck, I've considered buying more of them for other rooms. They make a really nice, cheap streaming media box. And if you soft-mod you can also add DVD playback. But yeah, if I won't be able to access Netflix/Youtube from a Wii in the near future... I'm gonna be miffed.

Netflix knows that more people stream on Wii's than any other device. They don't want to stop getting money.

Wiis are the best for a cheap media box that can also emulate very well, best bang for your buck. $60 will get you Wii and Gamecube games, DVD, Netflix, Youtube and most media file playback and you can also emulate tons of games.

I know, it's awesome. I got the Wii that's in my gameroom for $40 off eBay. The Roku in our bedroom was more expensive and does a lot less. That's why I say I'm considering another Wii for the kitchen, and another for the basement bar.

Hell yea, I plan on putting one in every major room of my house now since they are so cheap and can do tons of stuff. Netflix will let you use up to 5 devices at one time too, witch is all I watch.

Maybe this isn't the best thread for it, but now that I'm in the UK I'm looking into buying a (2nd hand) Wii.

What is a good price to snag one for here? I guess I'll look at ebay UK completed listings.

But more importantly, I know next to nothing about the hardware. What should I look for? I like the look of the black units more. Ideally I would like to mod it, maybe some of the models don't allow that?
What kind of controls are worth it and should I try to get (maybe in a bundle with the console)? WiiMote, Nunchuck, WiiMote Plus? Some memory card(s)? Other than the Motion Plus which I read is pretty nice, are there any games that make it worth it to get the Balance Board or any of that more esoteric stuff (I guess one can easily do without the crappy plastic wheels / pistol shaped holders).

I also recall from old threads that GameCube controllers were nice to have with the Wii - right?

Also, I'm guessing I would need to plug it into a TV, not to a Computer monitor, or does it have VGA or DVI or HDMI outputs and cables?

I don't know about UK prices. In the US, one can buy a used wii for thirty-five dollars.

Look for gamecube controller ports on top. Later wii models removed gamecube functionality. The orientation of the wii logo is also a good clue as to whether or not the wii can play gamecube games. The easiest way is to check for gamecube controller ports.

I don't care for the nunchuck personally, but some great games require the nunchuck. Classic Controller Pro is my favorite, but not all games support that. I don't have a balance board yet, but I hear that Punch Out utilizes this. Motion plus is nice for games that support it. Older games just treat it like any other wiimote. Basically, you're going to want a bunch of different wii controllers for the different wii games you're playing.

Memory card is only necessary for gamecube games. Wii games are saved to internal memory. An SD card is nice, but not strictly necessary.

Yes, you will want a gamecube controller. They rock.

Stateside, the wii connects to composite or component cables. I assume that in the UK, the wii will use SCART to connect.

Ok the versions with and without Gamecube ports are easy to distinguish - the "family edition" without GC ports look noticeably different.

Are all the GC ports Wiis equally good to mod though? Im thinking for example with PSPs, where for a good while the so called PSP 2000s with particular firmware versions were better to mod than any ones that were more recent.

Avoid the Wii Mini. It's a fine product but it's specifically for playing Wii games through SDTV.

No GameCube support or mod support. Not even internet.

Around here they are going for $30 at the pawns if you haggle with them. They usually come with a nun chuck random other accessories and sometimes a game left in the drive.
