Other than MGS4 on PS3, I haven't seen anything exclusive thats very impressive.
I played Resistance 2 the other night. I had high expectations, but I was *shocked* at the awful graphics. Literally, in many places this game looks like a PS2 release. The textures are uniformly bad - extraordinarily bad. We played some multiplayer on a map that reminded me of Perfect Dark on N64. The hills were brown, and the ground was blue. Nothing fit together at all, and the overall effect was nauseating. My friend who owns the PS3 says that R2 actually looks worse than the original! (can't confirm that). The scale of some of the maps was impressive, but if they have to go so low-detail to get that scale its not really worth it.
Anyway, it just struck me if this is what Sony thinks might be a GOW-killer for them - they are screwed.
On the other hand, for most multi-platform releases there is so little difference. Dead Space looks amazing on both platforms.
So who won the "most PROVEN powerful" award PS3 vs. 360?
Re: So who won the "most PROVEN powerful" award PS3 vs. 360?
I think when Final Fantasy is released on both systems we'll see who the real winner is. Most multiplatform games are developed with the 360 in mind with the PS3 being a after thought. Its going to be interesting to see developing priorities switched. MGS4 is beautiful and I haven't seen a 360 game touch MGS4 in the graphics or gameplay dept yet. Leave it to Kojima to push a console to its limits.
Re: So who won the "most PROVEN powerful" award PS3 vs. 360?
And I think what you're talking about will be the real hurdle for this generation. Most will agree that the PS3 has more horsepower, but even if you don't agree look at where the games are being pumped out: the wii. This is a completely differnet console cycle than those before. Because the wii is so simple to develop for, we'll see more shovelware in their pile, and less blockbusters for our 360's and PS3's. Development costs and time tables require huge investments meaning smaller companies can't risk 3 years of development with a loss on their return. Every publisher and developer (from a business perspective) wants to have a hit on the wii because overall it costs less to make a profitable game.claudio wrote:
not necessarily,
some developers just dont want to put the work in for more complex architecture,
look at super nes vs. atari jaguar for example, the jag was WAY more powerful than the snes,
but the developers used the extra 16 bit chip inside the jag (which was originally intended to only help the other chips tell what to do) to make their games and not mess with the 64 and 32 bit chips do to complexity and lack of understanding and tools/hardware atari left the developers.
ive seen alot of jag games that are impossible to do on a super nes, battlemorph blows star fox out of the water, but this is one of very few games that touched what the jag can do. (dont forget starfox cheated with the super fx chip)
So what this topic has made me wonder is, will we see some killer apps that prove our PS3 or 360 is the best?
Re: So who won the "most PROVEN powerful" award PS3 vs. 360?
Corn,
Wasn't trying to ignore you. I definately think Final Fantasy could be one to compare the diffences.
Its funny how obvious it used to be between consoles. When I look back to the Genesis vs. SNES days, people would get in an uproar about which was better. Now its so slight.

Re: So who won the "most PROVEN powerful" award PS3 vs. 360?
WE already have. Look at Gears 1&2, Halo 3(arguable but it's sold a hell of a lot of units), Dead Rising, Forza Motorsport 2 (it didn't sell loads but it's a damn site better than Gran Turismo 5: Demo Edition and it costs the same if not less!). The PS3 has Uncharted, Motorstorm 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, Ratchet & Clank and Wipeout HD.
I think the amount of great third party titles for both PS3 and 360 are enough to show that the 360/PS3 is where it's at for the Core gamers.
Damn right the publishers are pushing their titles to the Wii, it means they don't have to update any of their development platforms. Everything that ran on the GC will run on the Wii. Less overheads means more profit. It sucks that the Wii is getting half arsed side games (instead of full blown sequels) but as long as they can keep getting away with it the more they are going to do it. Now the problem lies in that the people buying these games are the uneducated gamers the Wii is targeting, they will buy any tripe as long as they recognise the brand.
You've got to understand that with the Wii being opened up to a whole new generation of users that haven't grown up with NES or SNES or even Playstation for the young folk on here. They don't know what a good game is, or what constitutes as a good game, because they don't know any better.
You take anybody who has started gaming with the Wii and take them into a store to buy some games for their Wii they won't have a clue, what we have grown up knowing second nature is completely foreign for a lot of these people, it's like asking your grandma to walk into PC World and tell them to get a PC. They won't know what's good or what brands are good. They won't even bother with the components section they'll walk up to what ever is on display and pick the one that is screaming the loudest at them from the display. That's if they have the slightest bit of initiative about them, chances are they'll walk up to the nearest salesperson and they'll tell them which one they should buy (aka the one that gets the salesperson the biggest commission at the checkout).
I read an article in a gaming magazine about this very thing and it took 3 girls, one who had got a Wii for xmas, one who had played a PS2 before and one that had played their brother's 360 and owned a Wii. Only one of them (the one who had played her brother's 360 before) bought a decent title. That was Twilight Princess. The complete noob bought Spiderman because she had seen the Spiderman films and liked them. The other one bought The Simpsons because she was familiar with the brand.
This just shows you what happens when a casual gamer walks into a store, they see familiar brands and latch on to them. This is the exact same thing that has happened before with licensed games based on franchises (which, as you all know, invariably suck) but instead of these games being relegated to the bargain bin because most gamers are informed and have been gaming for quite some time now. They're selling like hotcakes to the millions of people who have got a Wii as their first ever system. It's this shift in the market that the publishers are exploiting because they know they can put little effort into the games and make maximum profit. These publishers of crapware aren't worried about meta ratings or reviews, they know that the very people buying this shit doesn't read gaming magazines. They'll happily base their entire purchase off the blurb on the back.
Also, regarding the PS3 being more powerful than the 360, I don't see where it is. On paper they're so close it's silly. They're almost the same console architecture wise. Yes Metal Gear Solid 4 is pretty but so is Gears of War 2. There's real factual real world reason that either console is more powerful than the other. Unlike last generation where the difference was cut and dry. The Xbox was faster/nicer to look at purely because of a faster system clock and a better GPU. The PS3 and 360 are clocked the same (3.2GHz) have the same amount of ram (512MB) and even have the same amount of 'cores' or processing units. The major difference is, one costs a 3RD of the price or half if you want the same features as the PS3.

Niode,
Yeah, the shovelware problem on wii looks a lot like the situation in the 70's when the video game crash happened. I wonder if you'll see this influx of gaming (the wii) and then a crash when people become disinterested. The casual market that's appeared is insane though. Its an interesting time to be playing video games.

The casual market is a fad, just like Cabbage Patch Kids, Boy Bands and Hyper Color shirts. Once people get bored of the Wii it will go in the closet with the rest of the stuff I just mentioned. In this economy, casual gamers will put larger priorities in front of buying Wii games. Video games are a luxury for them, but for long term gamers like us, a way of life. One day Nintendo will realize all their casual gamers have moved on and they will be stuck with us once again. You know, the true fans that saw them through the dark days of N64 and GC.

In regards to the Xbox 360 being inferior in terms of storage space. Has their even been a game that has taken up a full disc worth of space yet?

Kojima had to cut down MGS4 to fit on a blu-ray... if thats not testiment then idk what is. (several games such as CoD4 were appearantly cut in size due to the lack of space on DVD9 if your asking specifically 360)RemyC wrote:In regards to the Xbox 360 being inferior in terms of storage space.
