These days the idea of starting a long games kinda makes me sweat.

I mean, if I pop in a game and get addicted to it and spend 40+ hours or more on it in whatever fashion, then no biggie.

But I feel like there's this invisible wall on starting the longer stuff. If I plug some game into How Long To Beat and get a result that's longer than 20 hours, I almost get intimidated and really hesitate to play it. I've started a few but spent very little time with them before giving in. Hell sometimes even a 7 or 8 hour game feels like a slog that I don't want to bother with.

Looking at my games beaten list for this year, only one of them took me longer than about 7-8 hours: Ninja Shadow of Darkness. And then only because that game is seriously tough, requires a lot of practice, and I worked on it between other games over a period of a couple of months. I was able to turn my brain off of it.

This is a recent development too. Never had a problem before. Its fuckin' weird.

I can only assume my ridiculously busy schedule of the past year is to blame for this mental block.

Not complaining or looking for help or anything, just thinking "out loud".

Not going to lie I kinda feel the same way....I'm at earth cavern(still) in ff and I'm having trouble getting the urge to go on now(I think I burned myself out on it somehow). Looking at how long to beat, I'm not going to come anywhere close to the times

Same.

I like action games and platformers that last a few hours max and RPGs that are 25 hours or less.

Longest game I played this year was PSO, which took about 40 hours. I typically don't play games that long but that game was like crack.

Second-longest was Final Fantasy II which was around 18 hours or so.

Crazy to see how "regular" games of today are longer than many of the RPGs of old. I'm pretty sure something like Bioshock or God of War III is longer than Ys IV, for instance.

I'm also blown away when someone complains about a single-player game being "only" 6 hours or whatever. I think of some of my favorite games of all time - like Contra - which can be finished in 30 minutes, and I wouldn't want it any other way.

For me the issue isn't whether a game is long or not, it's whether the game overstays its welcome. Dragon Quest VII, Persona 3 & 4, those all were 80-100 hours, but I never felt like "man, when is this going to be over?"

But a good short RPG is FFV. During the Four Job Fiesta I was knocking out playthroughs in about 20 hours.

I know. I think there are a lot of games that length that would be stronger if they were one or two hours shorter.

This is the issue for me too. I put nearly 60 hours into Okami...and I was sad when I had nothing left to do. Likewise, I put 120+ into DQIX, and I had to force myself to stop playing it. I went through Uncharted not that long ago, however, and while I enjoyed it, I kept thinking, "Will this ever end?" by the half-way point.

Read this in a DC thread and did a little more research -

The original Xbox was close to having backwards compatibility with the Dreamcast

It's news to me. I guess it makes sense seeing that the DC had Windows CE (or at least some of the games did)

The great thing about the PSP version of FF1 (the best version of the game, in my opinion) is that since it is on a portable and isn't a story-heavy game at all, it is perfectly-suited for the pick-up-and-play mentality of handheld games. The new ability to save anywhere sure helps, too. You can just pull out your PSP and grind for a few levels whenever you feel like it, without feeling like there is a huge time/story commitment like in most RPGs. This is why the PSP port of FFI is my 3rd favorite in the series.

Seriously, this right here. Was exactly why I got through 99% of golden sun 1 and 2 before ragequitting because I was underleveled(I'm going to go back and beat those to rectify that situation one of these days whn I knock out some other games first). Those apparently clock in at 22 and 32 respectively just for the main story but they don't feel that long at all at least not to me...

@lisa - gotta agree it's definitely the better of the two I've played to some extent(i've played dawn and it's nice but saving anywhere trumps it). Though I wish it had more story elements in it, I guess I'm just a big story guy because that is what drew me into golden sun

It's a little disheartening that it came down to the online incompatibility being the main issue this didn't happen. Then again, that could just be spin - maybe they didn't get too far along and just chucked the idea once they hit that first snag.

Dang it...forgot I had this mad catz steering wheel. I don't know where to put it so it doesn't look like clutter. Why did they have to make this thing so freaking huge?
