Somehow I don't think it was "free". U2 certainly didn't just make an album and donate it to Apple. I'm sure it added a couple of bucks to each phone that people didn't have a choice beyond buying the phone or not. But yes, 1st world problems.

If you have an itunes account, it is free for a limited time, should you choose to download it:

People were upset because it showed up as something in their cloud music that they didn't want visible in their libraries. Apple had to release a way to delete the album to fight back the outrage.

Yeah, I saw elsewhere there was a tool to remove it.
