Should I sell my SNES in favour of collecting other consoles

Post by YoMrWhite »

Hi there,

I recently bought a SNES, however I don't feel as attached to it as I thought I would, the nostalgia just isn't there, but the games are incredibly fun. My first console was a 64 when I was little, and then had the GameCube after that, then PS3, now Wii U. I had the intentions of collecting for the SNES ,N64, and GC, along with my Wii U also, but only to a certain list of games.

I am a uni student with casual employment, and I don't buy a tremendous amount of games because I want to finish the ones I buy. I live in a PAL reigon (Aus), so the games tend to be more expensive, especially for the SNES (bargains for the N64 and GC can still be found regularly), making the Virtual Console even more enticing. I mean, I have been hunting for ages for a reasonably priced ALttP, even before buying the SNES itself to result in no joy, but the sale, $6.50, done and dusted. Super Metroid is around 1 tenth of the price around. Local sales emulate the e-bay prices which is terrible.

So, my question; would it be wrong of me to sell my SNES? I would use what I get from it to put into my other consoles, I can probably get ~$320 for what I have for it.

I do like having physical copies as this is something I want to keep throughout my life, but the prices for most things are so inflated.

I do think if I did sell it, I would buy another one when I would be able to afford more things for it (ie, after graduation and full time employment)

Cheers,
YMW

Ah the eternal debate continues.

If you do this, you better have no regrets. We've heard lots of stories about members here sad that they have a hard time trying to get back their collection the lost or sold off years ago.

Sometimes its for valid reasons. Money, education, Rent. Sometimes for less than valid reasons.

You have priorities and sometimes you have to let go of a few things. Which is totally understandable. Just make sure you know how to use that money wisely.

My best guess is to look online and check the value/rarity of a game. There are lots of common SNES games out there. Hold on to the ones that are worth more or that you know will be harder to find later on.

That way if you do decide to recollect in a few years, you have the most important games that you care about.

Sooner or later everyone is stung by the nostalgia bug.

Yeah, I hear that all the time, it is what is making second guess absolutely everything about it; I like to learn from others as much as I can, but at this moment in time, I don't know selling it would result in regrets. If I am re-investing per se into other consoles, I'd like to think that it would supress the nostalgia bug which made me want it in the first place.

It would just streamline what I am collecting, as I feel I just have bitten off more than what I can chew. Considering that my SNES collection isn't huge, and consists of commonish games which pop up regularly, I don't think re-collecting it will have too many dramas.

I think truthfully I do want to sell it, but I don't want to have made a wrong decision and later wallow in regret about it.

As a fellow Australian, I feel your pain with the SNES prices here; I've been struggling with SNES collecting for over two years and only own about 10 ten games.
On the other hand, I've noticed that the Mega Drive seems to be a lot cheaper to collect for if you're after games from that generation.

Haha yes, the struggle is real. There are some cheaper ones I'll admit, but I'd rather get games for other systems. I think for now I'll just stick to my others and start fresh of collecting SNES in a few years after I graduate and have more money haha, or maybe I won't.
A Mega Drive would be pretty sweet though... Damnit, must focus on what I have haha

I never sell anything unless I dislike it. In the 80s I sold my Colecovision and my game collection so that I could afford some new games for my NES. The neighbor lady swindled me and I only ended up with enough money to buy Pro Wrestling. Stupid decision and I regretted it forever, but I learned to stop selling games after that.

Should you sell your SNES in favor of which other console? That's the question. What console are you considering buying using the funds?

If you are OK with emulation quality, consider getting SNES games, and even N64 games, on the WiiU Virtual Console. That might be an easier solution. Can't you play those on the controller screen?

I would use it to collect both N64 and GameCube. I don't see that as a bad move as there are still all those games I didn't get to own during my childhood.

I recently got ALttp on the Virtual Console as it was on sale, been loving it, I think that is probably a better way to go for now.
